The final collaboration between director James Bryan (Don't Go In The Woods) and producer-writer-star Renee Harmon (Lady Street Fighter), Jungle Trap is a surreal horror dreamscape about a jungle hotel haunted by kill-crazy ghosts in loin cloths. The movie was unedited, unscored, and unseen by human eyes for over two decades, until the Bleeding Skull! team meticulously edited the movie under Bryan's guidance and recorded a soundtrack utilizing vintage synthesizers. In its raw state, the movie was hugely entertaining. But in its long-delayed final form, it's a monumental video era triumph. One of Hollywood's most prolific directors, William A. Wellman was responsible for more than 80 features and a string of masterpieces including Wings, the first film to win the Best Picture Oscar, The Public Enemy, which made a star of James Cagney, screwball classic Nothing Sacred, the original A Star is Born and this marvellous noir-inflected Western, The Ox-Bow Incident. Set in a small Nevada town where tensions are running high thanks to a spate of cattle rustling, things reach boiling point when cowboy Larry Kinkaid is murdered. With the sheriff out of town, the residents form a posse and head to Ox-Bow Canyon to find the three men they believe to be guilty including Dana Andrews and Anthony Quinn in early major roles and enact their own form of justice. A favourite of both Clint Eastwood and star Henry Fonda, who serves as the film's moral centre, The Ox-Bow Incident is a tough, complex picture whose uncompromising starkness continues to astound to this day

The extraordinary films of Thai filmmaker and artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul (BLISSFULLY YOURS, TROPICAL MALADY, SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY, Cannes Palme d'Or-winner UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES, CEMETERY OF SPLENDOUR) have defined him as one of contemporary cinema's most unique voices. Apichatpong's hallucinatory debut feature MYSTERIOUS OBJECT AT NOON is an experimental documentary mix that wends its way through the landscapes and mindscapes of rural Thailand. A film crew travels from the Thai countryside to Bangkok, asking the people they encounter along the way to expand upon a story involving a wheelchair-bound young boy and his teacher. The resulting stories are later re-enacted by non-professional actors in dramatic re-creations of the freely associated narrative strokes supplied. The daisy-chain structure of interlocking vignettes is inspired by the surrealist game Exquisite Corpses, and its formal strategies are aligned with both documentary realism and the avant-garde, but this boldly original debut looks and feels like nothing else. Second Run present the film from a new 3K restoration by the Austrian Film Museum and Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Foundation and includes exclusive extra features. There's a satisfying sense of closure to the definitive noir kick achieved in The Big Heat: its director, Fritz Lang, had forged early links from German expressionism to the emergence of film noir, so it's entirely logical that the expatriate director would help codify the genre with this brutal 1953 film. Visually, his scenes exemplify the bold contrasts, deep shadows, and heightened compositions that define the look of noir, and he matches that success with the darkly pessimistic themes of this revenge melodrama. The story coheres around the suicide of a crooked cop, and the subsequent struggle of an honest detective, Dave Bannion (Glenn Ford), to navigate between a corrupt city government and a ruthless mobster to uncover the truth. Initially, the violence here seems almost timid by comparison to the more explicit carnage now commonplace in films, yet the story accelerates as its plot arcs toward Bannion's showdown with kingpin Lagana (Alexander Scourby) and his psychotic henchman, the sadistic Vince Stone, given an indelible nastiness by Lee Marvin. When Bannion's wife is killed by a car bomb intended for the detective, both the hero and the story go ballistic: suspended from the force, he embarks on a crusade of revenge that suggests a template for Charles Bronson's Death Wish films, each step pushing Lagana and Stone toward a showdown. Bodies drop, dominoes tumbled by the escalating war between the obsessed Bannion and his increasingly vicious adversaries. Lang's disciplined visual design and the performances (especially those of Ford, Marvin, Jeanette Nolan as the dead cop's scheming widow, and Gloria Grahame as Marvin's girlfriend) enable the film to transcend formula, as do several memorable action scenes--when an enraged Marvin hurls scalding coffee at the feisty Debby (Grahame), we're both shattered by the violence of his attack, and aware that he's shifted the balance of power. --Sam Sutherland

From Jindich Polák, director of the 1963 Czech sci-fi classic Ikarie XB-1, comes another foray into science-fiction with this lesser known but equally impressive feature Tomorrow I'll Wake Up and Scald Myself with Tea. But unlike the serious hard sci-fi approach of Ikarie, this film is a deliciously demented time-travel romp that manages to be both hilariously silly and impressively ingenious at the same time. In the near-future, time travel has become a possibility, and a group of neo-Nazi's hijack a time-ship in order to go back to 1944 to deliver a hydrogen bomb to Hitler and thus secure victory in WWII Polák expertly balances the film's disparate elements to produce a work of immense pleasure which is unpredictable, irreverent, intelligent and wildly funny - and which emerges one of the great undiscovered sci-fi movies of the 1970s. Adam Sandler fans are sure to enjoy this no-brainer comedy, but everyone else is strongly advised to proceed with caution. Before scoring a more enjoyable hit with his 1998 comedy The Wedding Singer, the former Saturday Night Live goofball played Happy Gilmore, a hot-tempered guy whose dreams of hockey stardom elude him. But when he discovers his gift for driving golf balls hundreds of yards, he joins a pro tour to win the prize money needed to rescue his beloved grandma's home from repossession. The trouble is, Happy's not so happy. He's got a temper that frequently flares on the golf course (he even dukes it out with celebrity golfer Bob Barker), but a retired golf pro (Carl Weathers) and a compassionate publicist (Julie Bowen) help him to perfect his putting game and adjust his confrontational attitude. How much you enjoy this lunacy depends on your tolerance for Sandler's loudmouthed schtick and a shocking number of blatant product-placement endorsements, but if you're looking for broad comedy you've come to the right tee-off spot. --Jeff Shannon
