Ursula Andress voted the greatest Bond Girl ever sports another iconic bikini and this time it literally kills! Set in the near future the film opens with Andress killing her penultimate victim in The Big Hunt a reality-TV style game show which selects both 'Hunter' and 'Victim' from participants; the two then chase one another around the globe: kill your 10th victim and you win millions! Andress' final victim is the cool sun-loving Italian Marcello (Mastroianni) who also needs to notch up another kill! Oscar Winning director Elio Petri's ground-breaking film heralded generations of films like 'Rollerball' or Schwarzenegger's 'Running Man' about gladiatorial-death shows and announced our age of increasingly outrageous reality-TV and the latest fascination with 'Hunger Games' dystopia. Aspiring, but cash-strapped, actress Sumika (Eriko Sato) returns home to the village of Ishikawa to attend her parents' funeral and renews her feud with younger sister Kiyomi (Aimi Satsukawa), who previously damaged Sumika's reputation by portraying her as an underhand character in her popular manga comic. Hoping to inherit a sizeable sum, Sumika is forced to stick around when brother Shinji (Masatoshi Nagase) tells her of lengthy legal delays. As Sumika settles back into her old room, a series of flashbacks brings to life the family's previously eccentric life, contrasting it against the calm and peaceful setting of rural Japan.

After the success of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET in 1984, many a movie that moulded together slasher thrills and supernatural chills was rushed into production - from SLAUGHTERHOUSE ROCK (1988) to THE HORROR SHOW (1989) and Wes Craven's own SHOCKER (1989). None, however, were quite as notable nor as notorious as the bombastic blood-spiller BAD DREAMS from 1987, which roped in its own Freddy Krueger alumni with sexy Scream Queen starlet Jennifer Ruben (from A NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST 3: THE DREAM WARRIORS). Also starring the late, great B-thespian Richard Lynch (CUT AND RUN) as a Jim Jones-style reverend who begins to avenge his creepy cult of followers from beyond-the-grave, BAD DREAMS features some frantic and ferocious special effects, plenty of tormented teens and some of the finest frights of its decade! Featuring the legendary Bruce Abbott (RE-ANIMATOR) and produced by Hollywood heavyweight Gale Anne Hurd (ALIENS), whilst featuring a screenplay from DIE HARD's Steven E. de Souza, it is no wonder that BAD DREAMS became one of the most popular slasher classics of the 1980s... and 88 Films is proud to present this work of gruesome genius in horrific HD! It might just stop you getting a good night's kip!

Lucio "King of the Eyeball Gag" Fulci made his name with a series of gory, gooey horror epics, and The Beyond stands above all as his outré masterpiece. The largely incoherent plot has something to do with a turn-of-the-century curse and a doorway to hell in the cellar of an old New Orleans hotel. Fulci shows his usual sensitivity with wooden acting, clumsy dialogue, and buckets of oozing blood and pus, but don't let that get in the way of enjoying this mad tale of zombies from hell invading Earth and eating their way through a cast of humans: crucified martyrs, blind visionaries, creepy hotel handymen, befuddled cops, and a plucky pair of heroes desperately fleeing a horde of hungry undead. The blood-red art direction is eerily beautiful, and Fulci's relentless long takes, punctuated by jolting shock cuts and eruptions of grotesque violence, create a mood of sheer paranoid horror right down to the final, mind-bending image. And don't forget the Fulci claim to fame: eyes are gouged out, eaten away, melted with acid, and (shudder) popped out by a spike through the back of the skull. Yech! If you dare ignore such piddling details as narrative logic and let yourself get carried away on the creepy visuals, it's a deliciously stylish treat, an edgy bit of Gothic gore pitched in all its bone-crunching, flesh-ripping, organ-splatting glory. This sadistic, sanguinary hell-spawn tale is for gore-hounds only. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

ABNORMAL FAMILY - Directed by Masayuki Suo (1984, 63 minutes) The debut film of the director of the international hit comedy SHALL WE DANCE (1996) follows the Mamiya family after the latest arrival of the voluptuous new bride of over-sexed eldest son Kôichi. Kazuo sees his new sister-in-law as a source of release from study stress, while his sister Akiko, after donning her Office Lady uniform heads straight to a workplace that offers much more in the way of financial incentive. Suo s only ever pink film is a bawdy pastiche of the works of Ozu Yasujirô, presenting this far-from-typical family through idiosyncratic editing and compositional. BLUE FILM WOMAN - directed by Kan Mukai (1969, 78 minutes) Blue Film Woman is a feverish mishmash of horror, blackmail sexploitation and trippy nightclub sequences revolving around the daughter of a stockbroker who is brought to his knees by an unexpected financial crash. Real-life Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein inspired many distinguished films including Psycho The Silence of the Lambs and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre but none is quite as disturbing as Deranged. Roberts Blossom gives an alarmingly convincing performance as rural eccentric Ezra Cobb whose mother's death unhinges him to the point where he not only lovingly preserves her corpse in the living room but also goes out to find 'friends' to keep her company – not all of whom are dead when he finds them! Perversely Ezra's more worried about what mother would say about his various activities than he is about the prospect of being found out. Indeed like Gein he's cheerfully open about his activities when visiting friends but no-one believes him. Like Carnival of Souls and The Honeymoon Killers this is one of American horror cinema's great one-offs an eerie genuinely unsettling but also darkly comic experience. Gene Hackman is a career officer assigned a routine mission well beneath him: deliver a prisoner (Tommy Lee Jones) from Europe to the United States. However, the simple assignment becomes a daring cat-and-mouse game played as the last flames of the Cold War are flickering. This is the first of three films that teamed Jones with director Andrew Davis. In 1989 Jones was a wild card: an actor respected but only popping up in grade B fare. After Davis' Under Siege and The Fugitive, Jones was America's favourite gruff character actor, with an Oscar on his mantel. With a weaker script, Davis still creates the same kind of magic here. Hackman is superb as the officer, an action role similar to others that the nearly 60-year-old unexpectedly excelled at (Bat 21, Narrow Margin) during this period. Tight, tense and with no letup in the third act, The Package is a good gem for a Saturday night flick. --Doug Thomas

A year after they'd created one of the defining British gangster pictures with Get Carter, three Michaels writer-director Mike Hodges, producer Michael Klinger and star Michael Caine reunited for another crime picture, albeit with a more oddball flavour Caine plays Mickey King, a successful pulp novelist responsible for such titles as My Gun Is Long and The Organ Grinder, who is invited to ghost-write the autobiography of a mystery celebrity. His client turns out to be a former actor, played by Mickey Rooney, well-known for his gangster roles and real-life gangster connections but death is around the corner, and King finds his commission to be a lot more complicated than he first imagined. A favourite of J.B. Ballard, Pulp has long existed in the shadow of its predecessor. Tonally, it could not be more different Get Carter never had the time for sight gags and one-liners but it's a real gem in its own right and fully deserving of a wider audience. Based on an unpublished novella by John Steinbeck (written on commission expressly to provide treatment material for Hitchcock's screen scenario), Lifeboat found the Master of Suspense navigating a course of maximal tension – in the most minimal of settings – with a consistently inventive, beautifully paced drama that would foreshadow the single-set experiments of Rope and Dial M for Murder. After a Nazi torpedo reduces an ocean liner to wooden splinters and scorched personal effects, the survivors of the attack pull themselves aboard a drifting lifeboat in the hope of eventual rescue. But the motivations of the German submarine captain (played by Walter Slezak) on the eponymous craft might extend beyond mere survival...With a cast including Shadow of a Doubt veteran Hume Cronyn and the extraordinary, irrepressible Tallulah Bankhead, this 'picture of characters', as Franois Truffaut aptly termed the film, oscillates dazzlingly between comic reparte and white-knuckle suspense – a perfect example of 'the Hitchcock touch'.
