Play the music! Light the lights! The Best of the Muppet Show is now available on DVD--and what a show it is! All non-human life is here in a muppet-fest of music and comedy: from pigs in space to talking rats, singing chickens to a chocolate "moose". The initial 50-minute feature has all the best bits from this inspirational, celebrational 1970s show including Kermit's sensitive rendering of "It's Not Easy Being Green" and Miss Piggy's less sensitive take on Wonder Woman. In addition to the main compilation the DVD contains two further classic episodes, one starring a game Elton John and the other featuring Mark Hamill and select members of the Star Wars crew. By far the best of the other extras is Of Muppets and Men, a behind the scenes look at the making of The Muppet Show, narrated by Jim Henson--it's a revelation to put the faces of Frank Oz et al to the voices of Miss Piggy and her companions. However, the rest of the extras are standard fare: humorous character profiles and the like. But then this DVD isn't really about extras: it's more a joyous celebration of the musical mayhem and mirth of muppetry--and fantastic family entertainment at that. --Helen Baker
