  The ArtistDeep Purple is one of the all-time great British rock bands with album sales exceeding 100 million albums since the formed in 1968. Up to this point the band is still touring the world and remains one of the most important names in rock history. 'Copenhagen 1972' was recorded over 40 years ago featuring Deep Purple's Mk II line-up (Blackmore-Lord-Paice-Gillan-Glover). This exact line-up released albums that are milestones of rock: 'In Rock' 'Machine Head' and 'Fireball'. Yes one might even say that those were the halcyon days of the band which were sparked by the 1969 recruitment of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover band-mates in Episode Six to create the so-called Mk II DP line-up. Glover was an excellent bass player and a fine songwriter but it was singer Gillan who really gave Purple the star quality the first line-up featuring Rod Evans and Nick Simper had lacked. They joined forces with Ritchie Blackmore on guitars the unforgettable Jon Lord on organ and Ian Paice on drums and soon the Mk II line-up became the most commercially successful up to this point. The ProductImagine a world without 'Machine Head'. Imagine a Deep Purple set-list without 'Smoke On The Water'. Imagine a time when the music business had yet to become a vast multi-national conglomerate. This was the primordial landscape on March 1 1972 when Deep Purple took to the stage at the Kobenhavns Boldklub (KB) Hallen in Copenhagen. It was a time of no boundaries or restrictions no blueprints or formulas. Rock music wasn't exactly in its infancy but there were still plenty of new territories to explore mountains to climb peaks to conquer. It was a time when anything was possible. And Purple were on a mission to prove it. Purple had completed their 'Machine Head' album at the tail-end of 1971 but at the time of this recording it hadn't arrived in the shops yet. Nevertheless their show contained three songs 'Highway Star' 'Lazy' and 'Space Truckin' - from that legendary release. It must have been a mind-boggling - hang on a minute make that life-changing - experience to be part of the Danish audience this stellar night. Everything about this recording is spontaneous and un-choreographed loose and lethal teetering and tempestuous. An explosive combination of brinkmanship and barely controlled chaos. This in a lip-synched and auto-tuned modern-day music world comes as a breath of fresh air. The high spots just keep on coming. Jon Lord's heroic keyboard playing on 'Lazy' the mischievous guitar vocal sparring between Blackmore and Gillan on 'Strange Kind Of Woman' the positively progressive vibe of 'The Mule' before Ian Paice's epic drum solo kicks in Gillan showing exactly why he gained the proud title of 'silver-throated screamer' on 'Child In Time' and Glover's often under acknowledged bass-lines underpinning each song like a network of steel girders. The list goes on... 'Copenhagen 1972' is available on DVD including the full show in a stunning video and audio quality. All material has been restored in 2013. On top of the Copenhagen show the DVD also features three bonus video live tracks - 'Strange Kind Of Woman' 'Smoke On The Water' and 'Space Truckin' - recorded in New York (at Hofstra University Hampstead Long Island to be precise) on May 29 1973. The exclusive never before seen documentary 'Deep Purple and The Music Revolution' makes this reissue of one of Deep Purple's greatest shows a must have!   The Who: Live at the Royal Albert Hall commemorates a remarkable charity gig in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust. Roger Daltrey does allow himself a smirk as he declaims his famous hope that he'll die before he gets old, but other than that, The Who are to be commended for playing their reunion entirely straight. Their souped-up rhythm'n'blues was always propelled by a self-belief as fervent as it was absolute; had any irony been allowed to impinge on proceedings here, the spectacle of three men well into their 50s delivering a set of what remain definitive hymns to youth and its attendant furies would have been wholly preposterous. As it is, the three surviving members of The Who (Daltrey, Pete Townshend, Jon Entwhistle) combine with keyboardist John Bundrick and drummer Zak Starkey (son of Ringo Starr) to altogether engaging effect. There is, obviously, nothing wrong with the songs "Pinball Wizard", "The Kids Are Alright", "You Better You Bet", and they all get the treatment they deserve here. In fact, the only downsides are the many guest performances, which are either redundant, like Noel Gallagher's rhythm guitar on "Won't Get Fooled Again", or actually detrimental, like Kelly Jones' dreadful braying of "Substitute". --Andrew Mueller
