  From the renowned opera house in Barcelona, TDK presents a new production of Ponchielli's Romantic opera La Gioconda, realised in cooperation with the Arena di Verona and successfully shown in the famous opera festival's 2005 programme. The Barcelona production features internationally acclaimed singers as well as acclaimed soloists and ballet dancers from the Gran Teatre del Liceu. The Title role is sung by American Deborah Voigt, one of the most important dramatic sopranos of her generation. As her blind mother Polish Contralto Ewa Podles spreads the overwhelming warmth and broad range of her voice while convincingly conveying the character's suffering. Canadian tenor Richard Margison as the exiled nobleman Enzo and Italian baritone Carlo Guelfi as the spy and agent provocateur Barnaba excel opposite the two female characters. The overall approach is simplicity and clarity - the costumes are dark and elegant with only some recognisable and significant colourings. The atmosphere of the city of Venice is depicted as the harbinger of death - in director Pier Luigi Pizzi's words, Venice is 'metaphysical and cold, moving us to tears. ...The carnival is not associated with pleasure and illusion but is felt to be a way of exorcising the fear of death.

  When in 1964 an in-house songwriter for the Pickwick label was introduced to the Welsh viola player from avant-garde composer La Monte Young's group, few predicted the profound effect this coming together would have on the development of rock music. But before the year was out this unlikely couple had formed a band, hooked up with Pop-Art supremo Andy Warhol and were recording a collection of songs that many believe started it all. It was later claimed that The Velvet Underground & Nico - for this is the record in question - only sold 5000 copies upon its release, but everyone who bought it went out and formed a band. Certainly David Johansen, Richard Hell, Tom Verlaine, Alan Vega, Wayne County, most of the Ramones, half of Blondie, Patti Smith and David Byrne did just that - the rest, as they say, is history. This documentary film traces the entire history of New York's punk movement; the VU years, the Warhol influence, the Dolls reign, and the handover of power to the bands who, despite their differences in sound, shared the sensibilities and attitude introduced to the city's musical landscape a decade before. These were the groups and musicians who claimed the lower east side of the city as their playground and CBGBs as their HQ. With the aid of performance footage, rare archive, exclusive interviews and some of the most exciting music ever recorded, this programme offers a visual experience of these events second only to having lived through them.   The Christmas Oratorio, Bach's six-part cantata cycle, was presented by The Monteverdi Choir under the direction of John Eliot Gardiner at the Heiderkirche in Weimar in December 2000 as the culmination of a year-long pilgrimage. Gardiner's mission had been to perform Bach's complete canon of liturgical cantatas, in appropriate religious settings, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the composer's death. This is a magical record of a splendid musical occasion. Although the Oratorio is seasonal, the tale and the manner of its telling repay repeated listening regardless of the time of year. The commitment of Gardiner, his singers and musicians is deeply moving and is heightened by the splendid Baroque surroundings. The story, related largely by tenor Christoph Genz, is a rich tapestry of musical textures, ranging from the celebratory pastoral opening to the poignancy of many of the solo passages (soprano Claron McFadden's bell-like tones soar, in particular). In one of the accompanying brief documentaries, Gardiner says that at a time when we're weighed down with wallpaper music, Bach provides a means of escape through his sacred music. The proof is in the holistic nature of this piece, with its combined senses of nature at work and order, represented by the discipline of the music itself, of almost mathematical proportions. Sublime. On the DVD: two discs each contain three parts of the Oratorio with a short documentary providing some useful background to Gardiner's pilgrimage and an exploration of his belief that through music, "Bach tells us what it's like to be a human being as part of the universe." The picture format is 16:9 and provides ample digital quality; the setting inevitably imposes its own limits on the viewing experience. The segment for the "Third Day of Christmas" features a choice between the concert camera and the conductor camera so you can vary the picture, but this is really just a gimmick soon forgotten if you're mainly interested in the music. You can listen to the soundtrack in LCPM stereo (best), AC3 Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 surround. --Piers Ford
