Aviation was still only in its infancy when military strategists began to think of its importance for waging war. The first World War saw brave pilots risk their lives in 'dog fights' over the trenches and men like Manfred von Richthofen the Red Baron and Ernst Udet became national heroes in Germany. The Versaille Agreement put a quick end to further development of the German airforce even though a great deal was carried out in secret. Then came Hitler's meteoric rise to power and the German Luftwaffe staged a full dress rehearsal of modern war plane technology during the Spanish Civil War. The Luftwaffe quickly became a war machine to be to be reckoned with. The swift victories achieved during early years of World War II would not have been possible without the German airforce. The gradual build-up of Allied air superiority during the course of the war later prompted German scientists and engineers to concentrate on the first jet-powered and rocket-propelled aircraft. But these revolutionary new technologies came too late to stave off the gradual collapse of the German forces. The following rare film excerpts in colour and black and white help to illustrate the development of the German airforce from 1914 onwards in an objective and exciting way. Bonus material on this DVD includes private film material taken by members of the German airforce and engineers together with interviews made with famous German pilots.
It's hard to imagine how shocking this film was when it first broke on the film scene in 1968. There's never been anything quite like it, though it's inspired numerous pale imitations. Part of the terror lies in the fact that this one's shot in such a raw, unadorned fashion it feels like a home movie, and all the more authentic for that. Another is that it draws us into its world gradually, content to establish a merely spooky atmosphere before leading us through a horrifically logical progression that we could hardly have anticipated. The story is simple. Radiation from a fallen satellite has caused the dead to walk and hunger for human flesh. Once bitten, you become one of them. And the only way to kill one is by a shot or blow to the head. We follow a group holed up in a small farmhouse to fend off the inevitable onslaught of the dead. And it's the tensions between the members of this unstable, makeshift community that drive the film. Night of the Living Dead establishes its savagery as a necessary condition of life. Marked by fatality and a grim humour, it gnaws through to the bone, then proceeds on to the marrow.--Jim Gay
This dark melodrama based on the John Patrick story 'Love Lies Bleeding' stars Barbara Stanwyck as the wonderfully wicked Martha Ivers a wealthy and domineering woman who controls a small town after inheriting a large family fortune. She lives with her weakling husband a district attorney running for mayor played by Kirk Douglas in his feature film debut - a role that's an unusual departure from his later work. What no one in the town knows however is that Stanwyck and Dougl

What a trip! An entertainingly psychedelic adaptation of Jacqueline Susann's splendidly trashy novel telling the story of three remarkable women whose lives are affected by show-business celebrity. Revered composer John Williams (Star Wars) won his very first Oscar - and nomination - for Best Music.

Abbott & Costello star in this version of Jack and the Beanstalk. After a modern prologue in monochrome Bud and Lou adapt their usual sharpie-and-patsy roles to colorful fairytale settings and Buddy Baer is an excellent foil as the fearsome giant. (Listen for cartoon-voice Mel Blanc playing several roles in the I Fear Nothing song.) Makes a fabulous children's matinee.
This is the story of a brave woman who volunteered to join SOE (Special Operations Executive) during WWII.
A collaboration between producer David O. Selznick and Italian director Vittorio De Sica (The Bicycle Thief) could only end up an interesting movie. And that's just what happened with Indiscretion Of An American Wife (1954). Jennifer Jones married to Selznick at the time is the American wife on holiday in Rome; Montgomery Clift is her Italian lover. She bids him farewell at the train station he begs her to stay. That's form the basis of a very well-acted character study. While the plot's simplicity itself production was not. A trainload of writers toiled on the script some with no credit: Truman Capote Carson McCullers Paul Gallico and Alberto Moravia among others. De Sica spoke no English. Selznick hated the original title Terminal Station and had it changed. And it's rumored that Jones had an interest in Clift that he didn't return. It's a wonder the movie was finished at all. And it is quite a testament to Jones and Clift that they give such strong performances. Stars and subject matter produced a money-maker. And the picture's costume design by Chrisitian Dior was nominated for an Oscar.
