It's hard to imagine how shocking this film was when it first broke on the film scene in 1968. There's never been anything quite like it, though it's inspired numerous pale imitations. Part of the terror lies in the fact that this one's shot in such a raw, unadorned fashion it feels like a home movie, and all the more authentic for that. Another is that it draws us into its world gradually, content to establish a merely spooky atmosphere before leading us through a horrifically logical progression that we could hardly have anticipated. The story is simple. Radiation from a fallen satellite has caused the dead to walk and hunger for human flesh. Once bitten, you become one of them. And the only way to kill one is by a shot or blow to the head. We follow a group holed up in a small farmhouse to fend off the inevitable onslaught of the dead. And it's the tensions between the members of this unstable, makeshift community that drive the film. Night of the Living Dead establishes its savagery as a necessary condition of life. Marked by fatality and a grim humour, it gnaws through to the bone, then proceeds on to the marrow.--Jim Gay

  • James Stewart - Made For Each Other/Pot O' Gold [1939]James Stewart - Made For Each Other/Pot O' Gold | DVD | (31/03/2008) from £8.08   |  Saving you £-2.09 (-34.90%)   |  RRP £5.99

Made For Each Other: Oscar winner James Stewart earns himself ""a place among the screen's most notable actors"" (Hollywood Spectator) and Carole Lombard delivers ""The best performance of her career"" (Newsweek) in this humor-laced marital drama that's as ""refreshing as a breath of spring"" (Motion Picture Herald). Attorney John Mason (Stewart) marries Jane (Lombard) after a blissful one-day courtship. Life is wonderful...until they are overwhelmed by the demands of John's hard-hearted boss a meddlesome mother-in-law and the birth of a baby. Just when the marriage is at the breaking point a crisis turns their world upside down. Will their newfound love falter...or are the young newlyweds truly made for each other? Pot O' Gold:Based on a popular radio money giveaway show of the same name Pot O' Gold was James Roosevelt's first (and last) attempt at movie producing. Probably because his father was then president of the United States Mr. Roosevelt was able to hire Hollywood's best talent: the ever-bewildered but lovable James Stewart who had won an Oscar for The Philadelphia Story the year before; the beautiful and tempestuous Paulette Goddard who had just starred with Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator and because 1941 was the peak of the big band era popular Horace Heidt and his Thirty Musical Knights. The story revolves around the band's struggle for its ""big break"". The members all live in Mrs. McCorkle's boarding house and spend their time practicing on the roof which maddens Charles Winninger the wealthy owner of the neighboring health food factory. Everyone else in he neighborhood seems to love it. Mrs. McCorkle's daughter Molly (Goddard) sings with the band and has the utmost confidence it will succeed. Jimmy Haskell (Stewart) arrives in town and immediately meets Molly and the band. He's a former music store owner who has come at the request of his music-hating uncle who advertises his products on a radio show ""The Haskell Happy Hour"" - music-less until he goes on vacation and Jimmy Molly and the band take over!

Korea is often called America's forgotten war yet history tells us that almost 150 000 American servicemen were either killed or wounded during this ""police action."" In this collection of newsreels and U.S. Government footage you will relive America's experiences in Korea from the earliest days of intervention in 1950 to the signing of the Armistice in 1953. Disc 1 - The First Forty Days - On June 25 1950 North Korean forces attacked South Korean positions south of the 38th parallel. U.S. President Truman ordered air sea and land armed services to give support to the overrun South Korean army and people. The Turning Of The Tide - After six weeks of holding the last position in Korea the Pusan Perimeter the 95 000 men defending it were looking for a way out. The actions that followed appeared to turn the tide of the war. The New War - The Communists reached out for an easy victory in South Korea and came close to achieving it. Yet when the will of the United States is tested it showed to be strong. Until the most savage experience of the Korean War began... Disc 2 - The 38th Parallel - Under orders from Field Commander U.S. General Ridgway the beaten and battered UN forces were able to turn the tables on the Chinese. The Communists started the New Year with a problem that affected the Allies only a few months earlier a long and vulnerable supply line. Ridgway's War - With what is now believed to be eight hundred thousand enemy troops slowly retreating General Ridgway's new objective was to reach the Communist supply and communication network north of the 38th parallel. The Peace Saga - The beginning of the end began when all parties agreed with the Red Cross to exchange sick and wounded prisoners as a ""gesture of peace."" When Joseph Stalin died the Allies were convinced that at long last the Communists were looking for a peaceful solution.
