  • How To Lose Friends And Alienate People / Ghost Town [DVD] [2010]How To Lose Friends And Alienate People / Ghost Town | DVD | (30/05/2011) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

How To Lose Friends And Alienate People: How To Lose Friends And Alienate People Stars Simon Pegg as Sidney Young a disillusioned intellectual who both adores and despises the world of celebrity fame and glamour. His alternative magazine Post Modern Review pokes fun at the media obsessed stars and bucks trends and so when Young is offered a job at the diametrically opposed conservative New York based Sharps magazine its something of a shock! It seems Sharps editor Clayton Harding is amused by Young's disruption of a post-BAFTA party with a pig posing as Babe. Thus begins Sidney's descent into success - his gradual move from derided outsider to confidante of starlet Sophie Maes - and a love affair with colleague Alison Olsen that will either make him or break him. Ghost Town: Deadpan hilarity and quirky charm come alive in Ghost Town starring Britain's favourite comedian Ricky Gervais (The Office) as social reject Bertram Pincus. Emmy award winner and seven times Bafta winner Gervais proves his Hollywood worth in this transatlantic feel good love story about a man a woman and a ghost. Pincus is a New York City dentist with horrendous people skills. When a routine surgery goes awry Pincus is pronounced dead but is miraculously revived seven minutes later. The ill-mannered Manhattanite suffers only one lasting after-effect; the ability to see and speak with the dead. Word soon gets out in the spirit community and Pincus is irritated to discover he's the go-to-guy for every phantom with unfinished business in the city. At the forefront of the ghostly mob is recently deceased Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear - Little Miss Sunshine Baby Mama) who is determined to stop the remarriage of his widow Gwen (Ta Leoni - Spanglish Fun with Dick and Jane). The laughs unfold when the prickly and romantically inexperienced Pincus smitten with Gwen tries to woo her away from her betrothed - with hysterically awkward results. With sharp performances and beautifully dry Gervais execution Ghost Town won't fail to make viewers laugh out loud. With a host of special features including commentary from renowned director David Koepp and 'making Ghost Town' this is one DVD that should be in the collection of every Ricky Gervais fan.

  • The Preacher's Wife [1997]The Preacher's Wife | DVD | (12/02/2001) from £4.75   |  Saving you £10.24 (215.58%)   |  RRP £14.99

This tedious remake of the classic Christmas movie The Bishop's Wife falls on its face by significantly altering the careful design of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert E Sherwood's story for the original film. In Sherwood's version, a rather wooden, inept bishop and his lonely wife unknowingly take into their lives a heaven-sent angel who aids the former and ends up falling in love with the latter. In this unnecessary update, an inner-city preacher (Courtney B. Vance) and his estranged spouse (Whitney Houston) are visited by a celestial goof (Denzel Washington), whose unsolicited offer of help is enough to galvanise Vance's character to fix his own problems. What that means is this: by the second act, there's no reason to have Washington's angel in the story. Even his infatuation with the missus isn't enough to warrant his hanging around this movie; the change is a colossal blunder by director Penny Marshall. Vance ends up stealing the film from Washington, but it's a Pyrrhic victory; for the most part this movie just seems like a series of random scenes between opportunities for Houston to belt out songs. --Tom Keogh

Few actresses can play frothy and ditzy as well as Anna Faris, star of the fizzy What's Your Number?. Faris's easy ability to fly along on the wispiest of plot threads, staying likable all the way, is harder than it looks, and Faris's talent makes What's Your Number? a fun, saucy date-night trifle. Faris plays Ally Darling, a woman who's had 20 boyfriends, and makes the mistake of reading a women's magazine article that says that a woman who has had more than 20 lovers has a harder time ultimately marrying. Ally then wonders if one of her "magic 20" might have been The One, and sets about to track them all down. What's Your Number? has a talented cast surrounding Faris, including Blythe Danner as her wedding-obsessed mum, Joel McHale as a former boss (and possible new "number"), and the gorgeous Chris Evans as Colin, Ally's neighbour. Ally and Colin strike up a friendship while she tries to track down her exes, and of course the viewer can see they are perfect for each other long before the script allows them to. Faris and Evans are winning and cunning, and manage to rise above the script that emulates the raunch of Bridesmaids but mostly sidesteps that film's giant heart. But it's not for lack of Faris's trying--she's irresistible, hilarious, and touchingly vulnerable. Her performance in What's Your Number? is a perfect 10. --A.T. Hurley
