The ultimate small-screen representation of Loaded-era lad culture--albeit a culture constantly being undermined by its usually sharper female counterpart--there seems little argument that Men Behaving Badly was one of 1990s' definitive sitcoms. Certainly the booze-oriented, birds-obsessed antics of Martin Clunes' Gary and Neil Morrissey's Tony have become every bit as connected to Britain's collective funny bone as Basil Fawlty's inept hostelry or Ernie Wise's short, hairy legs. Yet, the series could easily have been cancelled when ITV viewers failed to respond to the original version, which featured Clunes sharing his flat with someone named Dermot, played by Harry Enfield. Indeed, it was only when the third series moved to the BBC and was then broadcast in a post-watershed slot--allowing writer Simon Nye greater freedom to explore his characters' saucier ruminations--that the show began to gain a significant audience. By then, of course, Morrissey had become firmly ensconced on the collective pizza-stained sofa, while more screen time was allocated to the boys' respective foils, Caroline Quentin and Leslie Ash. Often glibly dismissed as a lame-brained succession of gags about sex and flatulence, the later series not only featured great performances and sharp-as-nails writing but also sported a contemporary attitude that dared to go where angels, and certainly most other sitcoms, feared to tread. Or, as Gary was once moved to comment about soft-porn lesbian epic Love in a Women's Prison: "It's a serious study of repressed sexuality in a pressure-cooker environment." Series 5 includes: "Hair" in which Tony returns from holiday to discover Dorothy has convinced Gary she should move in. And that Tony should move out; "The Good Pub Guide" in which our heroes are dismayed when The Crown gets a new look and new landlord (The Fast Show's John Thomson). Tony rescues the pub's old condom machine as a present for Deborah ("I thought it was something we could enjoy together."); "Cowardice" in which Tony becomes convinced Deborah is going through a lesbian phase; "Your Mate Vs Your Bird" in which increased tension in the household persuades Dorothy to reconsider her living arrangements; "Cardigan" in which Gary, concerned he's becoming middle-aged, suggests they go to a rave; "Rich and Fat" in which Tony goes on a diet after Gary accuses him of being "a bit of a podgemeister"; "Home Made Sauna" in which temptation comes Gary's way when Dorothy and Deborah go away for a sailing weekend. The DVD version also features aquiz.

Rather than a conventional record of a stand-up comic at work, Johnny Vegas's Who's Ready for Ice Cream? is a pseudo-documentary meditation on what makes good comedy, and how success is a threat to comic spontaneity. Trapped by his own celebrity, Vegas is kidnapped by a brutal de- programmer and shipped off to the Edinburgh fringe to rediscover his roots in humiliation and despair. True comedy, we learn, comes from pain. He is forced to share a room with a truly unfunny comic who wakes him up to tell him gags and forces him to eat baby food; he is sponsored by an ice-cream man, who wants ice cream to figure in the routines; and to cap it all he is randomly beaten by the de-programmer. Not all of this is remotely as funny as Vegas and his co-stars thought it was, though there are wonderful moments of excruciating embarrassment. However, the routines framed by it include moments of real genius--Vegas at his foul-mouthed, self-hating best. Talking about, say, how he was conned into working with the famous monkey puppet in the belief it was going to be released into the wild is inventive fantasy of the highest order. --Roz Kaveney

If They Could See Us Now, originally broadcast on Christmas Day 2001, is the first in a trilogy of Only Fools and Horses specials. This one sees Delboy Trotter and family living the high life in the South of France, having become millionaires following the sale of a rare and valuable watch that had been knocking about in the Trotters' garage. However, Del manages to lose the entire family fortune following a crash in Central American stocks. Now the Trotters, including Rodney, wife Cassandra and Del's young son Damien are back on "Hooky Street", in the old flat in Nelson Mandela House, broke and owing £50,000 to the taxman. Although this extended episode contains some funny business, particularly involving Rodney and Cassandra's efforts to reinvigorate their love life, it feels like a series extended too far beyond its natural life. Much of the fluency and chemistry between the ageing cast has evaporated in their lay-off. Writer John Sullivan's forte had been belly jokes which whooped up from nowhere in the plot, but here the humour is contrived and implausible. The business over the mix-up regarding Uncle Albert's funeral also strains credence, while the final scenario involving a TV quiz show is flatly predictable. Still, 20.3 million watched this show, a tribute to the enduring affection for the series. --David Stubbs
The directorial debut of Oscar-nominated actor Casey Affleck (The Killer Inside Me) I'm Still Here is a portrayal of a tumultuous year in the life of Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line Gladiator). With remarkable access the documentary follows the Oscar-nominee as he announces his retirement from a successful film career in the fall of 2008 and sets off to reinvent himself as a hip hop musician. Joaquin outrageous antics feature fellow A-listers P. Diddy Ben Stiller and a now infamous appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. The film is a portrait of an artist at a crossroads and explores notions of courage and creative reinvention as well as the ramifications of a life spent in the public eye.
