An overworked air traffic controller takes a well-earned seaside holiday. He soon discovers that with his wife three kids a dog and the inflated ego of a devious tycoon to cope with relaxation is the last thing he's likely to get!
He's a ginger-haired kid in a parka, but don't underestimate this little hellraiser; Angry Kid is the product of Aardman Animations but couldn't be further from the amiable antics of Wallace & Gromit. If he's not stuffing himself with chocolate and fizzy drinks until he's sick, Angry Kid is ramming a cotton bud up his nose or relentlessly picking on his little sister. Originally played on the Internet and digital television, these (roughly) one-minute sketches are sarcastic, irreverent and definitely not aimed at kids. In "Bone" Angry Kid falls off his bike and has to fend off a ravenous dog who's after the bone newly jutting out from his broken elbow, while in "Hoax Call" he torments a directory enquiries man into shooting himself. Animated using a process called pixilation, director Darren Walsh created Angry Kid using a real actor as a base for a series of masks, creating movements frame by frame. His expressions are hilarious, but what's most appealing about this repugnant little brat is his embodiment of teen angst. Alongside the gross-out humour come some classic observations on teenage quirks, like Angry Kid facetiously enquiring which swear words he's allowed to use. Remember doing that? On the DVD: Angry Kid's animated menus show him abusing the viewer and lead to a generous amount of extras. The making-of documentary "Inside Angry Kid" goes some way into the process of pixilation and the creation of the masks, together with interviews with the animators. A montage and teaser trailer for the next series highlight some of the best moments, as does the image gallery. Copies of Angry Kid's school and police reports highlight some of his worst moments, but the funniest touches are a director's cut of one episode and three bizarrely hilarious foreign language (read: Angry Kid impersonating Chinese, French and Spanish) films. --Laura Bushell
Based on Peter Barnes' hit play this caustic hilarious and irreverent black comedy has rightly become a cult classic. Unfortunately the young earl is also the sole heir to the family fortune so his relatives go to great lengths to trick him into siring a new heir. Then they can institutionalise him and

'A brave new tradition in British filmmaking, in which the heroes are ordinary people, seen with love'. Roger Ebert Two Merseyside girls escape their humdrum lives for a night on the town, where they meet two Russian sailors on shore leave. For Teresa (Margi Clarke), it's a welcome bit of fun, but for Elaine (Alexander Pigg) it turns into much more One of the key British films of the 1980's Letter to Brezhnev is set against the backdrop of Thatcherism, Liverpool's club scene, one-night stands and a Europe still in the grip of the Cold War. Irma La Douce reunited The Apartment team of Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine with director Billy Wilder in an adaptation of the stage musical of the same name which had been a hit in Paris, London and New York. The screen transfer by Wilder and his colleague--writer IAL Diamond--however, omits the show's songs, relegating them to a background score refashioned by Andre Previn with some additional themes of his own. Background here is a complimentary term, for whatever qualms one might entertain as to this move, the two sets of themes are skilfully woven together by Previn and emerge as a witty and lyrical aural delight in their own right which is given due prominence on the soundtrack. Wilder is no rush to tell prostitute Irma's story: her affair with Lemmon being the pivot of the tale as he takes on the disguise of an English Lord. Lemmon and MacLaine beautifully play their mutual attraction under Wilder's deft direction with the slapstick never allowed to get out of hand. Many will recognise Wilder's touch in his handling of the scene where Lemmon as a policeman is carted off in a van full of voracious prostitutes from the bunks-in-the-train sequence in Some Like It Hot. The handsome production, designed by Alexander Tranner--with the occasional view of the Seine thrown in for good measure--and the Panavision photography by Joseph La Shelle are further assets. On the DVD: The DVD contains a longer than usual theatrical trailer, half shot as a cartoon with characters closely resembling those Pink Panther figures who emerged at the same time from the Mirisch Brothers, a pair prominent in sustaining the unique success of United Artists, whose name was deleted, in favour of the MGM logo, in the early 1960s. It's too bad that the music on this DVD transfer sometimes strikes a coarse note particularly over the extended opening credits. --Adrian Edwards
To mark the 50th anniversary, La Grande Vadrouille has been stunningly restored. The film is considered one of the greatest comic achievements of French cinema and one of the most popular films ever shown in France. During World War II, when their combat aircraft is shot down by the Germans, three English airmen (including Terry-Thomas as Sir Reginald) parachute to the comparative safety of Nazi occupied France. One lands on the scaffold of an amiable painter and decorator, Augustin (Bourvil). Another lands on top of a concert hall and is rescued by the irascible but patriotic conductor Stanislas Lefort (Louis de Funès). The third ends up in the otter enclosure of a Parisian zoo. When they try to help the airmen keep a rendez-vous at the Turkish baths in Paris, Augustin and Stanislas quickly find that they themselves have become targets for the German soldiers. Assisted by the daughter of a puppeteer and an anti-German nun, the two reluctant heroes accompany the three airmen on a reckless trek across France towards the safety of the neutral zone.
