People Will Talk is a brilliant comedy that also possesses a rare and engaging poignancy. Screen legend Cary Grant stars as Dr Noah Praetorius a lovable professor and head of a medical clinic who becomes the subject of a McCarthy-style investigation initiated by a jealous colleague (Hume Cronyn). Along the way Praetorius befriends and ultimately marries a young woman who attempts suicide when she discovers she is pregnant. But as the witch-hunt into the good doctor's perso
Adapted from SNL alumni Will Ferrell's one-man Broadway show this filmed performance finds the celebrated comic lampooning the 43rd President of the United States one last time before George W. Bush ends his eight-year term. From the former president's charmed childhood to his rowdy college years his post-collegiate stint as co-owner of the Texas Rangers and ultimate role as the leader of the free world no aspect of Bush's life or career is immune from Ferrell's outrageous brand of political satire.
Circle reminds us that, despite his less than successful dalliances with film and TV, Eddie Izzard's reputation rests securely on his genius for stand-up comedy. Circle comes on the back of an ever-growing global touring schedule, with this particular performance being recorded in New York. Always sensitive to his environment, the comedian throws in several local references to gratify his strongly partisan audience. Much of the delight of an Izzard performance is watching him weave from topic to topic, often painting himself into a corner, and Circle is no exception. A little slow to get started, once he finds his stride this is a veritable masterclass in live comedy, dealing with subjects ranging from the absurd to the everyday. Indeed, Izzard is almost a human equivalent of The Far Side cartoon series, weaving the worlds of the bizarre and the ordinary together to make fresh points: witness his show-stopping account of the Death Star canteen. This is a must for all fans, equally so for those yet to fall under his spell. --Phil Udell

George and Mildred was a spin-off from Johnny Mortimer and Brian Cookes successful 1970s sitcom Man About the House, and ran from 1976 to 1980. This release features the first six episodes. Starring the late, great Yootha Joyce as Mildred Roper, a sex-starved cockney housewife with pretensions to the middle classes, and Brian Murphy as George, her hopeless and incorrigible husband, this series sees them make the upward move to posh Middlesex suburbia, despite George being on supplementary benefit--mortgage conditions were evidently easier in 70s sitcomland. Their neighbours are snooty estate agent Jeffrey Fourmile, his wife Ann and son Tristram. Jeffrey is perturbed that the Ropers arrival will lower the tone of the neighbourhood ("Tristram will get nits!") as they stink up the street with their three-wheel car and cheap wartime furniture. Much mildly amusing comedy at the expense of the working/middle class divide ensues, with no double-entendre left unturned and some period gags to match the Ropers interior decor. Situations involving a local MP, Mildreds even snobbier sister and an unsightly caravan brought out the best in Joyce and Murphys excellent characters, while Nicholas Owen as Tristram was among the least annoying of child sitcom stars. --David Stubbs
Before his talk show So Graham Norton found infamy and acclaim filling the Friday-night saucy viewing slot on Channel 4 (a position formerly occupied by The Word, Eurotrash and the diabolical Denise Van Outen series, Something For the Weekend), Dubliner and one-time stand-up comic Graham Norton was probably best known to UK television audiences as the annoyingly chipper Riverdance-fan, Father Noel, in that episode of Father Ted where they have a caravan holiday. A seeming cross between a leprechaun on amphetamine and John Inman, Norton is a consummate ringmaster for the show's unique combination of audience embarrassment, celebrities, minor and major, game to be mocked with fawning irony (including Roger Moore and a number of ex-Bond girls, the divine Grace Jones, Catherine Deneuve and Mo Mowlam, among many others) and telephone pranks to unsuspecting fetishists abroad. On the DVD: In addition to the usual menus and chapter selection, there's a wry commentary from Norton in which he reveals he didn't like Billy Zane very much and that Mo Mowlam was unsuccessfully bullied by the spin doctors not to do his show. Plus, there's a six-minute interview with his nibs in which he cheerfully describes the show as "trivial fey nonsense" and defines "gay icon" as "someone who hasn't worked for 20 years or has done a really crap job for about 20 years". It concludes with a special message to DVD buyers: "Thank you for buying the DVD, and congratulations on being a little bit rich. I hope it doesn't end up being our generation's version of Betamax or a big audio-visual version of the Sinclair C5". --Leslie Felperin
