  • The American President [1995]The American President | DVD | (01/03/2010) from £7.96   |  Saving you £11.02 (221.73%)   |  RRP £15.99

What sounds like a high-concept romantic comedy pitch from hell--widower president falls for smart lobbyist while the world watches--is actually intelligent, charming, touching and quite funny. Granted, it's wish fulfilment all the way (when was the last time you saw a president who was truly presidential?) but in the capable hands of writer Aaron Sorkin (TV's Sports Night) and director Rob Reiner, TheAmerican President is incredibly enjoyable entertainment with quite a few ideas about both romance and the government. Michael Douglas stars as the president, who after three years in office starts thinking about the possibility of dating. When he auspiciously encounters cutthroat environmental lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening), sparks begin to crackle and the two begin a tentative but heartfelt romance. Of course, his job gets in the way--their first kiss is interrupted by a Libyan bombing--but darn it if these two kids aren't going to try and make it work! However, they hadn't counted on the president's Republican antagonist (Richard Dreyfuss), who starts carping about family values. The predictable plot--Douglas finally goes to bat for his lady and his country--is leavened by Sorkin's wonderful, snappy dialogue and a light touch from the usually subtle-as-a-sledgehammer Reiner. Both manage to create a believable White House-office atmosphere (with a crack staff including Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox, Anna Deavere Smith and Samantha Mathis) as well as a plausible and funny dating scenario. The true success of the movie, though, rides squarely on Douglas and Bening; this is unequivocally Douglas's best comedic performance (ergo his best performance, period) and Bening, usually such a good bad girl, takes a standard career-woman role and fleshes it out magnificently. You can see in an instant why Douglas would fall for her. One of the best unsung romantic comedies of the 90s. --Mark Englehart

  • The Hangover Trilogy - Limited Edition Steelbook [Blu-ray] [2013] [Region Free]The Hangover Trilogy - Limited Edition Steelbook | Blu Ray | (17/04/2019) from £33.98   |  Saving you £1.00 (3.13%)   |  RRP £32.99

The HangoverFrom the director of Old School comes a comedy about a bachelor party gone horribly wrong. Two days before his wedding Doug (Justin Bartha) and his three friends (Bradley Cooper Ed Helms and Zach Galifiankis) drive to Las Vegas for a blow-out night they'll never forget. But when the three groomsmen wake up the next morning with pounding headaches they can't remember a thing. Their hotel suite is beyond trashed and the groom is nowhere to be found. With no clue of what happened and little time to spare the trio attempt to retrace their bad decisions from the night before in order to figure out where things went wrong and hopefully get Doug back to Los Angeles in time for his wedding. However the more they begin to uncover the more they realise just how much trouble they’re really in. The Hangover: Part IIThe Hangover: Part II is director Todd Phillips' follow-up to 2009's smash hit The Hangover which became the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all-time and also won the Golden Globe for Best Film - Comedy or Musical. Reprising their roles from The Hangover Bradley Cooper Ed Helms Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha star in the film. Jeffrey Tambor Ken Jeong and Mike Tyson also rejoin the cast. In The Hangover Part II Phil (Bradley Cooper) Stu (Ed Helms) Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s wedding. After the unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas Stu is taking no chances and has opted for a safe subdued pre-wedding brunch. However things don't always go as planned. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas but what happens in Bangkok can't even be imagined. The Hangover: Part IIIIt's been two years. Phil (Bradley Cooper) Stu (Ed Helms) and Doug (Justin Bartha) are happily living uneventful lives at home. Tattoos have been lasered off files purged. The last they heard from disaster-magnet Leslie Chow (Ken Jeong) he'd been tossed into a Thai prison and with him out of the way the guys have very nearly recovered from their nights prowling the seamy side of Las Vegas in a roofie'd haze and being kidnapped shot at and chased by drug-dealing mobsters in Bangkok. The only member of the Wolfpack who's not content is Alan (Zach Galifianakis). Still lacking a sense of purpose the group's black sheep has ditched his meds and given into his natural impulses in a big way-which for Alan means no boundaries no filters and no judgment-until a personal crisis forces him to finally seek the help he needs. And who better than his three best friends to make sure he takes the first step. This time there's no bachelor party. No wedding. What could possibly go wrong? But when the Wolfpack hits the road all bets are off. The Hangover Part III is the epic conclusion to an incomparable odyssey of mayhem and bad decisions in which the guys must finish what they started by going back to where it all began: Las Vegas. One way or another...it all ends here.

  • Fawlty Towers: Complete Series 2 [1976]Fawlty Towers: Complete Series 2 | DVD | (08/10/2001) from £7.46   |  Saving you £8.53 (114.34%)   |  RRP £15.99

Often hailed as the greatest ever British sitcom, Fawlty Towers is closer to the more elaborate tradition of farce. Comprising two series made in 1975 and 1979, the total of just 12 episodes were painstakingly constructed by writers John Cleese and Connie Booth. Unlike most British farce, however, Fawlty Towers deals with the big themes--death, psychology, xenophobia and even sex-o-phobia (Basil's marriage to Sybil is the most sterile ever depicted in a sitcom).Basil's contempt for his guests is, of course, legendary. It takes little from patrons to unleash his sledgehammer sarcasm: "Rosewood, mahogany, teak? Sorry, I was wondering what you'd like your breakfast tray made out of," he sneers at a guest who dares request breakfast in bed. Like every Englishman, he wants to be king of his own castle and resents having to take in lodgers to maintain the place, especially the open-necked younger generation, whom he regards as sub-human. Mostly, though, Fawlty Towers is comedy of exasperation--who can forget the "damn good thrashing" Basil gives his clapped-out car, or the nervous breakdowns he almost suffers trying to make himself understood to Manuel? It's also comedy of embarrassment. The very fear of losing his dignity generally leads Basil into the most spectacularly undignified of predicaments. His inevitable misery is our sheer delight.--David StubbsSeries 2: Communication Problems The Psychiatrist Waldorf Salad The Kipper and the Corpse The Anniversary Basil the Rat

  • As Good As It Gets [1998]As Good As It Gets | DVD | (21/12/1998) from £4.99   |  Saving you £8.00 (160.32%)   |  RRP £12.99

For all of its conventional plotting about an obsessive-compulsive curmudgeon (Jack Nicholson) who improves his personality at the urging of his gay neighboor (Greg Kinnear) and a waitress (Helen Hunt), who inspires his best behaviour, As Good As It Gets is one of the sharpest Hollywood comedies of the 1990s. Nicholson could play his role in his sleep (the Oscar he won should have gone to Robert Duvall for The Apostle) but his mischievous persona is precisely necessary to give heart to his seemingly heartless character, who is of all things a successful romance novelist. As a single mom with a chronically asthmatic young son, Hunt gives the film its conscience and integrity (along with plenty of wry humoor)and she also won an Oscar for her wonderful performance. Greg Kinnear had to settle for an Oscar nomination (while cowriter-director James L. Brooks was inexplicably snubbed by Oscar that year) but his work was also singled out in the film's near-unanimous chorus of critical praise. It's questionable whether a romance between Hunt and the much older Nicholson is entirely believable but this movie's smart enough--and charmingly funny enough--to make it seem endearingly possible. --Jeff Shannon

Disney scored an unexpected hit with this goofy live-action remake of Jay Ward's Saturday-morning cartoon, a zippy Tarzan parody with topical references and absurd gags. Disney's big-screen version, George of the Jungle starring Brendan Fraser as the sweet, hopelessly inept jungle hero, puts the emphasis on slapstick and silly fun. The klutzy hero, still swinging into trees and stray boulders, saves a lost Los Angeles socialite (Leslie Mann) on safari and, completely smitten, leaves behind his tree-house home and simian best friend (an Oxford-accented ape voiced by John Cleese) to accompany the socialite back to the concrete jungle of LA, much to the frustration of her conniving fiancé (Thomas Haden Church). Fraser's enthusiastic performance enriches our hunky hero with endearing innocence and energetic pluck. The humour is spotty and consistently more juvenile than the original cartoon, but the unending parade of visual gags (including George's pet elephant Shep, transformed into an overexcited six-tonne puppy by inventive digital effects) keeps the tone light, frothy and winningly fun. --Sean Axmaker

  • Kindergarten Cop [1990]Kindergarten Cop | DVD | (01/09/2007) from £8.75   |  Saving you £-3.76 (N/A%)   |  RRP £4.99

This winning 1990 comedy stars Arnold Schwarzenegger in an initially self-deprecating role as a grizzled, big-city cop who goes undercover as a small-town kindergarten teacher to nab a killer. One of the best films of director Ivan Reitman (Dave), this comedy (with some thriller elements) went a long way to further soften and broaden Schwarzenegger's image after Reitman worked with him in the gentle Twins. But Kindergarten Cop is genuinely touching, the story of a hard man who visibly finds his true passion and soul by leaving behind the rot of urban crime. Penelope Ann Miller is a delight as the love interest, Pamela Reed is wonderful as Arnold's cop partner, old pro Carroll Baker is quite nasty as the villain's evil mother, and Linda Hunt--whose diminutive stature makes for quite a contrast with Schwarzenegger when they share scenes--is entertaining as a tough principal. Upon its release, some people assumed the title meant this is a good movie for little kids, but it isn't. --Tom Keogh
