The Three Stooges: Live And Hilarious
Friends since they were small boys Adam and Paul - who is who we do not know - have withered into two hapless desperate Dublin junkies tied together by habit and necessity. The difference today is that Adam and Paul - already near rock bottom - have finally run out of luck credit and friends. A stylized downbeat comedy the film follows the pair through a single day which like every other is entirely devoted to the business of scrounging and robbing money for drugs.
The Dessert Song: Terry rescues Charlie a young Greek Cypriot from a street brawl and lands Arthur and himself in the midst of internecine restaurant rivalry. You Gotta Have Friends: When Arthur does an old friend a favour everything turns nasty for both Terry and himself.
Kev watches too much television, the Idiot Boxof the title. An unemployed hooligan, he wants there to be something in his life apart from vandalism, drink and perfunctory sex. He rages against dogs and people who are as rude to him as he is to everybody--anger is who he is. His best friend Mick is even more bad natured, and between them they concoct a doomed bank-robbery. Kev beats up the police informer who sells him the guns; the police are watching the bank, waiting for it to be attacked by an entirely different bank robber; and their stolen getaway car is reclaimed by its owner. Often very funny, Idiot Box is a terrifying film about the stuntedness of young male Australian working class lives. Ben Mendelsohn and Jeremy Sims bring pathos and wit to their portrayals of Kev and Mick, while also making it clear that these are not young men you would wish to meet or fall out with. David Caesar's deliberately jagged directorial style echoes the adrenalin-driven lives of his protagonists and keeps us constantly on edge as he cuts between story lines. --Roz Kaveney

In the second volume of Friends Series 8, the next stage of Rachel's pregnancy is coping with everyone else's reactions and expectations. Immediately in "The One with Rachel's Date" we learn that Ross can't distinguish between father and friend. While their relationship grows ever more complicated, Phoebe just can't sit still as she moves from an infatuation with a sous-chef to her twin sister's fiancé (guest star Sean Penn). "The One with the Halloween Party" is when they meet, making for typically daft fun with the gang in costume: Monica is Catwoman, Phoebe is Supergirl, Chandler is The Velveteen Rabbit, Ross is Spudnik and Joey is Chandler! Penn's cameo continues into "The One with the Stain": while Rachel prays for an old lady to kick the bucket so she can get her apartment, Monica is concerned about the Maid she arranged. But that's nothing compared to her concerns over "The One with the Stripper" that she inadvertently arranges for Chandler! Highlights of this volume include meeting Rachel's explosive father, seeing her hand out cheques instead of candy at Halloween and learning why Chandler should be called Muriel instead of Toby. --Paul Tonks

As well as being acknowledged as one of Marilyn Monroe's finest performances Some Like It Hot is a comedy which presents sharp satire and zany slapstick from acting talents led by Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. It's Billy Wilder's film as much as anything else as the comic genius manages to offer plenty of laughs in this cross-dressing classic. Some Like It Hot bridges a gap between traditional Hollywood screwball comedies and the dawning of a saucier more permissive era. For Monroe it's her sexiest and funniest role. As well as looking great she shows natural comedy talent while Curtis and Lemmon have rarely bettered their performances. From the opening scene to the classic closing line of ""nobody's perfect"" this film is an absolute joy.
