Bedpan humour rules in Carry On Doctor, the vintage 1968 offering from gang, assisted by guest star Frankie Howerd as bogus faith healer Francis Bigger. Hospitals, of course, always provided the Carry On producers with plenty of material. Today, these comedies induce a twinge of serious nostalgia for the great days of the National Health Service when Matron (Hattie Jacques, naturally) ran the hospital as if it was a house of correction, medical professionals were idolised as if they were all Doctor Kildare and Accident and Emergency Departments were deserted oases of calm. But even if you aren't interested in a history lesson, Talbot Rothwell's script contains some immortal dialogue, particularly when Matron loosens her stays. "You may not realise it but I was once a weak man", says Kenneth Williams' terrified Doctor Tinkle to Hattie Jacques. "Once a week's enough for any man", she purrs back. Other highlights include Joan Sims, excellent as Frankie Howerd's deaf, bespectacled sidekick, Charles Hawtrey suffering from a phantom pregnancy, 1960s singer Anita Harris in a rare film role, and Barbara Windsor at her most irrepressible as nurse Sandra May. --Piers Ford

  • Fierce Creatures [DVD]Fierce Creatures | DVD | (27/04/2015) from £4.44   |  Saving you £8.55 (192.57%)   |  RRP £12.99

In an attempt to catch lightning in a bottle, John Cleese wrote Fierce Creatures with the purpose of reuniting the comedic cast of A Fish Called Wanda. Media mogul (Kevin Kline) owns a London zoo. He demands that the park raise more profit, so the new zoo director (Cleese) orders that only dangerous animals be displayed in order to maximize ticket sales. In a dual role, Kline also plays the mogul's son, who plans to run the zoo with the help of displaced employees (including Michael Palin) and zoo programmer Willa Weston (Jamie Lee Curtis). The situation lends itself to comedic confusion and split-second timing, and for a few good laughs the film is a pretty safe bet. It's not as hilarious as A Fish Called Wanda (that's a pretty tall order), but Cleese knows comedy, and his efforts are worth a look. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

This film Introduced Groucho's Africa lecture (one morning I shot an elephant in my pyjamas. Monkey Business Harpo, Chico, Groucho and Zeppo, head for high seas hilarity in this classic film comedy. And naturally no woman can resist a shipboard romance with the wily, quick-witted Groucho. Horse feathers The quintessential Marx Brothers comedy. As the fun loving president of Huxley college, Groucho tries to keep the student body in line with hilarious results! Horse Feathers contains some of the greatest sequences in movie comedy history. • Carry On Matron [1972]Carry On Matron | DVD | (07/07/2003) from £8.22   |  Saving you £4.77 (58.03%)   |  RRP £12.99

Hattie Jacques finally got to the play the title role in 1972 when Carry On Matron immortalised the character she had developed during several previous outings, most notably in Carry On Doctor. And she seized it with gusto. This is no one-dimensional performance, but a very human portrait of a woman doing her best to retain her authority in the face of mounting chaos--a raid planned by Sid James to steal the hospital's supply of contraceptive pills. Certainly, she's obsessed with regular bowel movements--this wouldn't be a Carry On film otherwise--but she remains a majestic figure of dignity with a touch of human warmth. Occasionally, too, a real hint of irony peeks through the slapstick and the innuendo. Surely scriptwriter Talbot Rothwell had his tongue lodged firmly in his cheek when he gave Barbara Windsor--then married to Ronnie Knight--the line, "I don't fancy being a gangster's moll!" Terry Scott makes a guest appearance and Sid James is at his most conniving and lecherous. Theatre impresario Bill Kenwright has a cameo role and there's an early appearance from Wendy Richard as a prototype Pauline Fowler. But it's the female stalwarts who shine. Joan Sims and Hattie Jacques were truly comic actresses of the highest order. --Piers Ford

  • The League Of Gentlemen - Live At Drury Lane [1999]The League Of Gentlemen - Live At Drury Lane | DVD | (19/11/2001) from £3.80   |  Saving you £12.19 (320.79%)   |  RRP £15.99

What do you think this is... Dick Whittington?" shouts Reece Shearsmith in The League of Gentlemen--Live at Drury Lane--the West End version of the BBC2 series--"You'll be wanting to see men dressed as women next!" Reece is, needless to say, dragged-up to the nines at this point. The first half of the production--which Shearsmith, alongside Mark Gatiss and Steve Pemberton took to Drury Lane in March 2001--sees the trio revisit their Perrier Award winning show of 1997. Clad in tuxedos, the League explore a public schoolboy's love of theatre and smut with sketches that border on post-modern: football fans chant "Ooh-ahh, Ophelia" during Hamlet; a Restoration comedy turns into a Faustian pact; Artic explorers battle repressed homosexuality. The second, and funnier half sees the action move to Royston Vasey, as Tubs looks over the audience and coos "we can't kill them all". The favourite characters transfer to the stage brilliantly, thanks to swift direction and filming that captures every macabre expression. Herr Lipp--looking like Richard Whitely in twin set and pearls--is a scream, and the closing mystery of "Who Shot Pauline?" is heaven for any League fanatic. --Ian WatsonOn the DVD: Not a great many extras here, but a couple of additional scenes are welcome. We get Benjamin and the Dentons at breakfast, familiar from Series 1 of the TV series, plus demented newsagent owner "Pop" and his dynastic ambitions for his two sons. There's also the "Big Woman" phone message which first appeared in the League's radio series, multi-angle versions of two sketches ("Scott of the Antarctic" and "Go Johnny Go Go Go Go"), Web site links and a screensaver. --Mark Walker
