One of the most recognisable faces in horror, Boris Karloff (or simply KARLOFF', as he was often billed) has been described as to the horror movie what Fred Astaire was to the musical. Presented here are the six films he made for Columbia Pictures, a collaboration which produced some of Karloff's finest acting roles. In The Black Room, Karloff takes on a dual role as twin brothers in 19th century Europe. One of the twins inherits the family castle and suddenly the local women start disappearing The Man They Could Not Hang, The Man With Nine Lives, Before I Hang, and The Devil Commands form the Mad Doctor cycle, a thematically linked series of films where Karloff always plays a doctor whose obsessions inevitably lead them to murder! And finally, The Boogie Man Will Get You is a delightful parody of the Mad Doctor films, starring both Karloff and Peter Lorre. Surrounded by new 1950s East End high-rise flats, a London detective thinks back to how different things were in the late 1930s. Then it was an area of overcrowded tenements teeming with impoverished unemployed people with little or no hope. He relates the story of attractive young Hetty who desperately tried to stop her younger brother descending into crime while her mother was endlessly urging her to take up with Wilkie, a smooth local racketeer, in the belief this would get the family out of poverty.
Glynis Johns, Diana Dors and Sybil Thorndike star in this powerful, sympathetic drama tracing the contrasting lives and often faltering progress of the inmates of a women's prison. Lee-Thompson. The film is featured here in a brand-new transfer from original film elements, in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. Jean Raymond, an upper-class woman with a gambling addiction, is given a twelve-month prison sentence resulting from her inability to pay her debts. One of Brian De Palma's most acclaimed films, this brilliant fusion of the obsessive sleuthing of Blow-up and The Conversation with themes drawn from real-life political scandals (the JFK assassination, Chappaquiddick, Watergate) starts with sound technician Jack Terry (John Travolta) accidentally recording what might be explosive evidence of a deadly conspiracy. Brilliantly shot by the then recent Oscar-winner Vilmos Zsigmond, this terrifically stylish thriller co-stars Nancy Allen as the eyewitness who becomes the unwitting target of John Lithgow's serial killer as he ruthlessly attempts to bury all the evidence. It's also a film about the filmmaking process: Terry is originally hired to work on the low-budget slasher film Coed Frenzy, and later turns his technical skills to much more serious use as he tries to reconstruct a political assassination on film in a way that will stand up in court.
