The Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds live concert was a sold-out sensation everywhere it played, and this concert DVD is the next best thing to being there for all the fans that couldn't attend the concert in person. The movie opens with Miley Cyrus backstage in make-up and hair, warming up with vocal exercises, then cuts to Hannah Montana (her alter ego)'s performance of Rock Star, and then back in time to four weeks before her performance when concert rehearsals were just beginning. It runs like a backstage special feature for a while, following Hannah Montana through coaching, choreography scenes with Kenny Ortega, and rehearsal sessions. Then it's back to concert footage from opening night in St. Louis and all along the tour, seasoned here and there with some fun looks at the concerts' special effects, quick costume changes, other logistical challenges (Hannah gets dropped during a routine early in the tour), and lots of shots of the enthusiastic, mostly female, 'tween audiences. The sound is adequate, but fails to replicate the live concert experience (the plus side is that your ears won't be ringing for hours after the performance). Hannah Montana's performance includes Rock Star, Life's What You Make It, Just Like You, Nobody's Perfect, and We Got the Party. The Jonas Brothers perform When You Look Me In the Eyes and Year 3000, and then Miley hits the stage with Start All Over, I Got Nerve, I Miss You (which Miley wrote for her Granddad), Going Away, GNO: Girl's Night Out, and The Best of Both Worlds. This concert presentation truly is the "best of both worlds", with easy availability and minimal expense. Better yet is the message that girls can do anything they want if they put their minds and hearts to it. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi
The Jonas Brothers head to the big screen-in Disney Digital 3-D -in a high-energy Walt Disney Pictures rockumentary feature film event from director Bruce Hendricks ("Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert")
This DVD follows the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus world tour, during which Miley and her alter ego wowed fans across the globe with songs from the hit TV show and Miley's own pop career.
To some they may just be a group of overgrown kids who never grew up, but to the skaters, BMX riders and stunt bikers who appear in the documentary Ultimate X their way of life is a calling. Bruce Hendricks's film of the 10th annual X games in Philadelphia not only goes some way to explaining the philosophy behind the lifestyle, it also features some of the most astonishing sporting footage committed to camera in recent years. During the course of the film's breakneck 30 minutes, the viewer will often find themselves repeating chapters just to make sure that they really have seen what they thought they saw--especially during the incredible stunts of the freestyle motor cross bikers. Yet Ultimate X is more than just a collection of flashy images, it makes an excellent attempt to give an insight into the scene through interviews with some of its major figures. While a couple fit the beach bum stereotype, the majority are lucid, articulate and obviously deeply skilled athletes. At the end of the day, however, what sticks in the mind about this remarkable film is the breathtaking combination of visual images, editing and crucially cool rock soundtrack--the sequence that ties the Foo Fighters' "Learn to Fly" with the Motor X Big Air competition alone is worthy of an Oscar. This is the best documentary of its kind since the acclaimed Hoop Dreams. On the DVD: Ultimate X comes in at a tidy half-hour, so the DVD fleshes out the feature with a range of extra footage. The interactive version of the movie offers the viewer a selection of icons that allow them entry into athlete profiles, a detailed look at their medal-winning runs, related features and tips on the various disciplines. As befits a film that places such store on the combination of music (ranging from Black Sabbath to Sum 41) and visuals, both elements are presented in pristine digital quality. --Phil Udell
