Mozart - Don Giovanni
As part of the celebration of the Roman Catholic Church's Year of Jubilee in 2000, José Carreras performed the Concerto Natale ("Christmas Concert") in the ancient basilica of Saint Ambrose in Milan before a large audience of senior clergy. The concert itself is a mixture of the sacred and the pretty much profane, including a setting of "Panis Angelicus" by Bach as well as the better-known one by César Franck alongside "The Little Drummer Boy" and--among the encores--"White Christmas". Carreras brings to all of this material his fine emotional discrimination: the voice is not what it once was, but the retraining forced on Carreras by illness manifests itself primarily as a tact and humility that looks in every case for what is best in the music. Conductor Giménez provides good four-square accompaniment throughout and is admirable, without being flashy, in Handel's "The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba". --Roz Kaveney
