Running for five highly successful years, Jokers Wild is a lively, rapidly paced panel game in which two teams of top comics compete for laughs from a studio audience. While team members delve into their repertoires for winning jokes based on topics drawn randomly from an oversized pack of cards, bonus points may be scored by opposing team members if they interrupt mid-gag to complete a punchline. Hosted by comedy legend Barry Cryer, the show's line-up is a Who's Who of British comedy talent from the 1970s; this second series features Ted Ray, Arthur Askey, Les Dawson, Ray Martine, Clive Dunn, Lance Percival, Jack Douglas, Graham Stark, Eric Sykes, Kenneth Connor, Alfred Marks, Professor Stanley Unwin and Ted Rogers, among others. Originally screened in 1970, this was Jokers Wild's most successful year, when series two, three and four were shown back to back on ITV in an exceptionally popular eight-month run.

  • The Pretenders - Greatest Hits [2000]The Pretenders - Greatest Hits | DVD | (22/01/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

The Pretenders Greatest Hits is a selection of 20 songs and their variously successful videos. Chrissie Hynde arrived in the UK in 1973, and after a period as the "Loud Yank" NME journalist, she realised her dream of putting a band together. "Stop Your Sobbing" was a terrific first single for The Pretenders, debuting a voice that defied comparison or description. Naturally it's included here. Chrissie hated the early videos for her songs, especially "Brass in Pocket", which was one of the very first shown on MTV. She relays this sort of information to camera in the terrific documentary, "No Turn Left Unstoned", featured on this DVD. Comments come in from Rosanna Arquette, ex-managers, Elvis Costello, Bono, and her oldest friend. The overall opinion of the singer-writer that comes across in these interviews is one of an irreverent genius, not afraid to speak her mind (as in her passionate standing for animal rights through the organisation PETA ("People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals"). The band's turbulent history is chronicled through drug-related deaths, firing and re-hiring, motherhood, and the controversial use of the F word on stage, back when such things were shocking. There have been Pretenders greatest hits collections before, but this is expanded with "Human" and "Popstar" from the 1999 Viva El Amor album. --Paul Tonks

INXS fans will rejoice at Live Baby Live, a buoyant concert film shot during an ecstatic performance before 72,000 hopping fans in Wembley Stadium on July 13, 1991. The Australian band's vocalist, the late Michael Hutchence, is at his feral-romantic best, stalking and swivelling his way through an energised set of welterweight pop. The show starts with a big, boomy "Guns in the Sky", takes a turn toward unexpected soulfulness with "New Sensation", and spreads the wealth with a sharp set of ballads and rockers. Hutchence has fun with a naughty "Know the Difference", plays around with a Jagger-esque take on confessional soul in "The Loved One" and milks "Never Tear Us Apart" for all it's worth. The band sounds more muscular than they did in the studio, hard-charging and rough on "Suicide Blonde", drunk on a jazzy guitar hook in "Need You Tonight", and completely danceable on "Bitter Tears." --Tom Keogh

Among the more charming--and improbable--of pre-millennial success stories is the left-field crossover triumph for this Welsh soprano, 12 years old at the time of her debut, and still on the near side of her teens in this concert video. At a time when "teeny pop" reigns over MTV and radio playlists, Church's serene programme of Welsh and Irish folk airs, devotional hymns, and generally tranquil classical melodies gives alternative music an entirely new meaning. Then again, it's just possible that Church's very appeal rests on the delicate balance between the unapologetic sweetness of her music and the unforced girlishness she flashes between songs, rare qualities indeed against the harsher foil of sexualised pop culture. Given the degree to which various predecessors, from Brenda Lee to Tanya Tucker to LeAnn Rimes, have been groomed to transmit a precocious "maturity", Church's virginal typecasting may be methodically anachronistic, but at least it offers a calming refuge from the mixed messages and soft-core spin offered by Britney Spears.Director David Mallet, who has become the DeMille of up-market music videos, applies a familiar balance of sure technical craft and slick sentimentality. He dresses the Brixton Academy concert site with a faux stained glass window, flickering candlelight and delicate laser lighting units that imbue Church with a backlit radiance, just so we won't miss the angel connection. Sceptics will also note her Andrew Lloyd Webber connection (the signature Pie Jesu), as well as canny nods to Celtic chic in the inclusion of such war-horse choices as "Danny Boy" and "My Lagan Love". Still, whether or not the young star achieves her dream of singing Tosca at La Scala, for the moment Church achieves a poised lyricism that is no mean feat. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com
