AWARD-WINNING filmmaker DOME KARUKOSKI brings to screen the life and work of one of the most influential and celebrated figures of twentieth century gay culture. TOM OF FINLAND is the beautiful and thrilling true story of Finnish artist TOUKO LAAKSONEN and his journey to international success. Touko Laaksonen, a decorated officer, returns home after a harrowing and heroic experience serving his country in World War II, but life in Finland during peacetime proves equally distressing. He finds post-war Helsinki rampant with homophobic persecution, and men around him even being pressured to marry women and have children. Touko finds refuge in his liberating art, specialising in homoerotic drawings of muscular men, free of inhabitations. His work made famous by his signature ˜Tom of Finland' became the emblem of a generation of men and fanned the flames of a gay revolution.
Finnish biographical drama directed by Dome Karukoski and starring Pekka Strang, Taisto Oksanen and Lauri Tilkanen. Touko Laaksonen (Strang), who would come to be known as Tom of Finland, serves in the Second World War and defends his homeland from invasion, becoming a decorated lieutenant in the process; this is not what he is remembered for however. Touko is homosexual and in the years after the war he encounters some of his old comrades again and forges a lifelong relationship with one of them, but he also suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and relies heavily on his sister for support. Touko is a skilled draughtsman and his homoerotic drawings gain him notoriety as part of an increasingly open gay community, despite the continued persecution of homosexuality in Finland and beyond. His art soon makes Tom of Finland a gay icon and a symbol for the emergent social movement for years to come.
Set in the frozen landscape of northern Finland, this raucous road trip begins when slacker Janne is sent out into the night by his beautiful and frustrated girlfriend Inari to purchase a cable box for their home. But the quest is not as simple as it sounds. Janne, accompanied by his two hapless and troublemaking friends, is propelled along a bizarre journey filled with such obstacles as naked, gun-toting Russians, some very hostile reindeer, a Jacuzzi of bikini-clad beauties, barroom brawls, Inari's creepy ex-boyfriend, and much more. Meanwhile, the police are in pursuit of the three friends at every turn. Unfolding at a breakneck pace, this winningly wacky comedy is an award-winning film festival favourite that was the biggest hit of the year in its home country (beating out the Harry Potter movies!).
