  The Bourne Identity (Dir. Doug Liman 2002): A man who may or may not be Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is found floating in the Mediterranean Sea and is hauled onto a fishing boat. With nothing but this code the amnesiac Bourne travels to Zurich and gains access to a safe-deposit box containing a gun thousands of dollars in various currencies and valid passports from numerous countries - each listing a different identity. Within minutes Bourne is on the run from a seemingly ever-present agency relying on language and fighting skills he didn't even know he possessed! Offering 000 for a ride to Paris Bourne gains the reluctant help of the nomadic Marie (Franka Potente). Meanwhile the shadowy organization headed by a tough-talking bureaucrat (Chris Cooper) sends numerous assassins (including the Professor played by Clive Owen) after Bourne and Marie. Paul Greengrass 2004): Expert assassin Jason Bourne (Damon) who continues to find himself plagued by the splintered nightmares from his former life. The stakes are now even higher for the agent as he coolly maneuvers through the dangerous waters of international espionage - replete with CIA plots turncoat agents and constantly shifting covert alliances - all the while hoping to find the truth behind his haunted memories and answers to his own fragmented past... Paycheck (Dir. John Woo 2003): Ben Affleck stars as Michael Jennings a brilliant computer engineer hired by high-tech corporations for specialized top-secret projects. Once a job is complete Jennings routinely has his short-term memory erased so as not to divulge any sensitive company information to future clients. Highly paid for his work he expects to earn .4 billion at the end of his latest 3-year project. But upon completion of the job instead of a big paycheck Jennings is handed an envelope filled with random objects and told that he has agreed to forfeit all payment. With his memory erased as usual Jennings has no way to prove them wrong until he discovers the objects are clues to the puzzle that once was his past. But with Federal agents hot on his heels Jennings quickly learns that more than just his paycheck is at stake. In a race against time Jennings must put the pieces together with the help of Rachel (Uma Thurman) the woman he has worked with and loved for the past three years who rekindles his memory of their life together before the people he once worked for have him killed.

  Perhaps surprisingly, the British comedy legend Norman Wisdom has made just 20 films, from his debut in Date With a Dream (1948) to the thriller Double-X (1992). From 1948 on he had his own TV series, Wit and Wisdom, but 1953 was the real turning point. Not only was his son Nicholas born, but he became an instant movie star with the release of Trouble in Store. Playing a character called Norman he brought his familiar stage and television personality to the big screen as a young man with the ambition to become a window dresser in a major department store. Ever loveable victim of his own clumsiness, all Norman's efforts to improve himself result in chaos. That is, until he meets Sally (Lana Morris), the girl of his dreams. Then things turn disastrous. Co-starring Margaret Rutherford, Trouble in Store introduced Wisdom's self-penned song which would become his theme, "Don't laugh at Me ('Cause I'm a Fool)". The film became a massive box-office hit and won Wisdom a BAFTA Award. Very much of its time, yet still highly entertaining, this video release provides the opportunity to nostalgically revisit and reassess one of Britain's greatest stars. Bringing Out The Dead (Dir. Martin Scorsese 1999): Nicholas Cage plays EMS paramedic Frank Pierce. It is the early 1990's and New York has not yet undergone its renaissance of recent years. Surrounded by the injured and the dying Frank is dwelling in an urban night-world crumbling under the accumulated weight of too many years of saving and losing lives. The film follows Frank over the course of fifty-six hours in his life - two days and three nights on the job - as he reaches the very brink of spiritual collapse and redemption.

  Though the Guardian opens with a nod or two to Three Kings, it really offers a cut-down version of Fallen, with Los Angeles Detective Kross (Mario Van Peebles) facing Telal--a body-hopping Sumerian demon he encountered at an archaeological site in Iraq during the Gulf War--entrusted by ritual scarification with the task of protecting a 12-year-old boy who will grow up to unite the three great monotheistic faiths (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) and thus set the Devil's work back millennia. A sub-plot deals with a red powder drug ("Chaos"), imported by the demon's minions, which catches on in LA sending coke-sniffing agents into murderous frenzies (the funniest scene) and briefly giving guest star dealer Ice-T superpowers until an ambiguously angelic hit lady (Stacy Oversier) tosses him off a building. There are elements of The Matrix stirred in, with Oversier and Telal dead ringers for the Carrie-Ann Moss and Hugo Weaving characters, but it inevitably boils down to a Fallen-style formula. It's stripped-down demonology--ever since The Evil Dead, those Sumerian demons have been getting a bad press--with direct-to-video action, but is by no means unlikeable. On the DVD: Along with the trailer, this disc offers IMDB filmographies for Van Peebles, Remar, Ice-T and John Terlesky (who used to be a busy B-actor in the likes of Chopping Mall and Valet Girls and now directs quickies such as Guardian). The transfer is augmented for 16:9 and looks significantly better than the video version, giving this low-budget effort a relatively lush feel, though the Iraqi desert does look as though it was an hour or so drive out of Los Angeles. --Kim Newman

Here are two films in which he does neither although he is killed off in Call It Murder! Beat The Devil: A group of international crooks and conmen are stranded in Italy whilst their steamer is repaired. Along with the Dannreuther's they are headed for Africa supposedly to sell vacuum cleaners but with an eye to buying land enriched with uranium. Call It Murder: A crime of passion murder leads to Ethel Saxon being sentenced to death in the electric chair. Just as the sentence is to be carried out the jury foreman's daughter confesses to having killed her lover with the forman having to help his daughter avoid the chair.

  Absurd surreal and very funny Dark Star was one of the primary inspirations for Red Dwarf. John Carpenter's lo-fi masterpiece crams into its 83 minutes an amount of invention that would shame films costing hundreds of times more. The crew of the Dark Star are on a 20-year mission to destroy unstable planets and make way for future colonisation. The smart bombs they use to effect this zoom off cheerfully to do their duty. But order prevails the nerves of this crew are becoming increasingly frayed to the point of psychosis. Their captain has been killed by a radiation leak and when an asteroid storm causes a malfunction Bomb Number 20 (the most cheerful character in the film) has to be a repeatedly talked out of exploding prematurely.
