Enjoy classic comedy with this DVD showcasing the outrageously funny Scottish comedian Stanley Baxter. Baxter who - like Ronnie Barker - went into self-imposed retirement in the late 1980s is fondly remembered for his risqu humour (he was an enemy of puritanical watchdog Mary Whitehouse) and his wickedly funny impressions (he was the first person ever to do an impersonation of the Queen on television). This first release concentrates on the one-hour specials that he did for ITV

  • Rock Follies: The Whole Story [DVD]Rock Follies: The Whole Story | DVD | (06/02/2017) from £17.98   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Mixing music, dance, fantasy and drama, this multiple-BAFTA-winning series broke new ground in charting the ups and downs of a fictional female rock trio trying to make their way in a male-orientated industry. Penned by emigre New Yorker Howard Schuman, Rock Follies brought the style of 1930s American musicals and a touch of Weimar decadence to the Seventies rock scene, casting a satirical eye on an often sordid world where burned-out Sixties idealism has given way to a commercialism that often crosses the line into exploitation. Making stars of Julie Covington, Rula Lenska and Charlotte Cornwell and featuring original music by Roxy Music's Andy McKay this fantastically popular series has only been previously available commercially in an edited format. This release includes all twelve episodes complete and uncut. SPECIAL FEATURES: Interviews with Howard Schuman and Andy Mackay

Trevor Nunn directs Richard Johnson and Oscar-nominee Janet Suzman in this landmark production of Shakespeare's tragedy of power and passion in Ancient Egypt. First broadcast in 1974 and based on Nunn's celebrated staging with the Royal Shakespeare Company, its intensity and originality raised the bar for small-screen adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. Emphasising the futility of the protagonists' unworldly love against the coldly calculating might of Octavian, adopted son of Julius Caesar, this intimately staged production earned a BAFTA award for director Jon Scoffield, with Janet Suzman receiving a BAFTA nomination for her mesmerising portrayal of the doomed Egyptian queen. Antony and Cleopatra also features early appearances by Ben Kingsley, Tim Pigott-Smith and Patrick Stewart who won universal praise in the role of Antony's loyal, agonised confidante, Enobarbus.

Reigning supreme for almost a decade as ITV's biggest comedian, Arthur Haynes was one of the most influential and popular comics that television has ever seen. His shows remained firmly in the top ten until his untimely death in 1966 robbed the world of a comedy genius. Lack of repeats ensured that subsequent generations were denied Haynes' comedic brilliance until the release of his surviving ATV shows on DVD. Featuring wickedly funny scripts from Alf Garnett creator Johnny Speight, this set contains all existing episodes of The Arthur Haynes Show. A lively mix of sketches and musical entertainment, Speight's scripts invariably drew on the familiar class antagonism which he would hone to perfection on Till Death Us Do Part. Haynes' robust working-class delivery was inspired never more so than in the character of Hobo Haynes, a belligerent, heavily decorated tramp fond of recounting tales of patriotic bravery whilst being 'up to me neck in muck and bullets'. This collection brings together all seven individual DVD volumes of The Arthur Haynes Show in a single set, returning him to his rightful place among the comedy greats. SPECIAL FEATURES: Val Parnell Spectacular (disc 17) Promotional spot (disc 7) Image galleries (discs 1, 3, 8, 12, 14, 17) Paperwork and promotional PDFs (disc 1)
