First broadcast in the autumn of 1986, the fifth series of Only Fools and Horses consists of half-a-dozen half-hour episodes that are absolutely vintage fare. Indeed, after this series, the BBC gave writer John Sullivan freedom to extend his writing to full feature-length episodes. This series, meanwhile, is a masterclass in characterisation, interplay and in delivering the comedic sucker punch that raises the belly laugh when you least expect it. Included here are "From Prussia With Love", in which Rodney (Nicholas Lyndhurst) and Del (David Jason) take in a heavily pregnant German au pair in distress for the night. Uncle Albert assures them he can talk German and addresses her thus: "Vot izz your name?". "The Miracle of Peckham" is especially well-worked, with a plotline involving missing lead from the church roof and a "weeping statue" which attracts the world’s media. "The Longest Night" sees Del and Rodney held hostage in a supermarket by a gun-toting robber. Never has Del delivered the words "You plonker!" with such feeling as when Rodney makes a grab for the sleeping robber’s cigarettes rather than his gun. "Tea for Three" sees Del sabotage Rodney’s chances with Trigger’s niece, Lisa; though it makes no sense here, prepare to guffaw when Trigger says, "My Gran had one with a squeaky wheel". "Video Nasty" sees Mickey Pierce use Rodney’s local council community film project as a means of making a cheap soft porn movie, while the concluding, characteristically poignant episode sees Del given the chance of a new life in Australia. With this series, a sitcom that once seemed like a poor Minder imitation came of age. On the DVD: Only Fools and Horses, Series 5 is presented in 4:3 picture ratio and Dolby Digital stereo. There are no extra features.--David Stubbs

There are things known and there are things unknown, and inbetween are The Doors...Over forty years after his death, Jim Morrison, lead singer of The Doors, remains a legend. Hailed by fans as prophet, priest, poet and magician, his charisma and mystique propelled The Doors to immediate cult status, their gigs selling out all over the world. Some of the most strident and powerful music ever created came out of this era, and at the forefront of this generation-defining musical force were Morrison and The Doors.Filmed in 1968, The Doors Are Open is a product very much of its time rebellious, compelling and radically constructed, the show counterpoints scenes of the group's stage concert with newsreel footage of student protests, political statements and footage of the war in South East Asia. It is a fitting tribute to a band that made an indelible mark on the music scene of its day. Also included in this release is The Doors In Europe mixing live concert footage from The Doors Are Open along with other performances from their European tour of 1968, this show is narrated by Paul Kantner and Grace Slick who, as members of Jefferson Airplane, shared the line-up on this legendary tour.

  • The Secret Life of Us : Series 1, Part 1The Secret Life of Us : Series 1, Part 1 | DVD | (27/10/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £29.99

The Secret Life of Us follows eight twentysomethings sharing three apartments in a Melbourne residential block, and may well be Channel 4's best-kept secret. Buried in a mid-week late-night slot the show has nevertheless developed a cult following as an antipodean answer to This Life, though one mercifully free of amateurish shaky photography. This is actually a good-looking soap spiced with post-watershed language, sex, nudity and a refreshing dose of humour--think Sex and the City meets Coupling, or Dawson's Creek goes to The Book Group. The show takes a while to get going, introducing too many characters too quickly in disorientating fashion, but becomes engrossing entertainment filled with realistically young, aimless and confused, if not very likeable characters. Central to the show is Alex (Claudia Karvan, soon to become much more famous in Star Wars: Episode III) giving a strong performance as an emotional insecure doctor who sets things rolling by having a fling with her best friend's boyfriend. Samuel Johnson meanwhile is the highly sexed struggling novelist whose work in progress, the titular Secret Life of Us offers commentary on the ever more tangled web of romance, deception and friendship. It's Australian drama for those who have outgrown Melbourne's Neighbours. On the DVD: The Secret Life of Us comes to DVD in an anamorphically enhanced 16:9 transfer which looks fine, showing just a little graininess in the darker scenes. The sound is Dolby Prologic and is more than adequate given the small-scale, intimate nature of the production. There are optional subtitles. --Gary S Dalkin

Hans Richter was for four decades one of the most influential members of the cinematic avant-garde. In this film he made the bold attempt to introduce this work to a wider audience. Using the framing story of a man who discovers how to craft and sell dreams to a series of anxious clients Richter allotted each dream (seven in all) to artists who included Max Ernst Man Ray Marcel Duchamp and Alexander Calder. Some chose to reprise their work in cinematic form - Ernst recreates a sequence from his collage novel La Semaine de Bont and Richter uses music by composers ranging from Darius Milhaud and John Cage to Duke Ellington. Shot for just $25 000 in a Manhattan loft the film went on to win the Venice Film Festival Award for the best original contribution to the progress of cinematography.
