Marlon Brando's intense performance dominates this atmospheric sexually charged feature from a golden age of British horror directed by Michael Winner and also starring Stephanie Beacham in her first major film role. Visually stunning in a High Definition transfer from the original film elements The Nightcomers sketches a prequel to Henry James' classic Gothic novella The Turn of the Screw with Brando in typically compelling form as the servant whose disturbing magnetic presence exerts a corrupting hold over the occupants of a country estate. Following the death of their parents Flora and Miles are left in the care of repressed governess Miss Jessel and housekeeper Mrs Grose. But it is Peter Quint the malevolent Irish servant who truly rules the household; Miss Jessel equally repulsed and fascinated by Quint is drawn into a secret sado-masochistic affair with him while Flora and Miles are increasingly in his thrall... • 63 Up [Blu-ray]63 Up | Blu Ray | (19/08/2019) from £7.79   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

The original 7 Up, broadcast in 1964 as a World in Action special, featured children from widely different social backgrounds sharing their hopes and dreams for the future. Inspired by World in Action founder editor Tim Hewat's passionate interest in both the Jesuit saying: Give me the child until he is seven and I will show you the man and his anger at Britain's rigid class system, this unique, groundbreaking series set out to discover how far the children's lives were pre-determined by their background. Director Michael Apted has returned every seven years to chart the group's progress, documenting the participants as they have become adults and entered middle-age, dealing with everything life has thrown at them in between; the very first example of a programme recording real people living real lives, this ground-breaking series has won an array of awards. Now, as the group reach retirement age, the series is back to discover what has been happening in their lives. Across three programmes, 63 Up reveals more life-changing decisions, more shocking announcements and joy and tears in equal measure.

A spin-off from Coronation Street, this sitcom follows the mixed fortunes of former Weatherfield boutique owner Leonard Swindley (Arthur Lowe). In his new position as assistant manager at a Dobson and Hawks chain store, the punctilious but ambitious Mr. Swindley seizes upon every opportunity to scale the social heights - arranging everything from intimate dinner parties to glittering charity galas and swinging teenage boutiques.Featuring scripts from an award-winning team that included Coronation Street contributors Harry Driver and Vince Powell, as well as noted playwright Jack Rosenthal, Pardon the Expression helped to define the type of comic role for which BAFTA winner Arthur Lowe would be most fondly remembered: that of the pompous, quietly floundering buffoon. Betty Driver - soon to be installed behind the bar of the Rover's Return - also stars as canteen manageress Mrs. Edgeley, with Dad's Army favourites John Le Mesurier and John Laurie, and Coronation Street stars Julie Goodyear and Amanda Barrie also making appearances.

Based on Norman Lindsay's controversial autobiographical 1935 novel, Age of Consent is the story of an artist (James Mason), grown tired of producing art for wealthy Americans, who moves to the wilds of Australia's Great Barrier Reef where he meets Cora (Helen Mirren), a teenage girl who inspires him and becomes his muse as well as the object of his desire. The penultimate film from the great Michael Powell (Black Narcissus, The Red Shoes, Peeping Tom) Age of Consent explores the obsessive nature of an artist approaching the twilight of his career. Misjudged and mis-handled on its initial release (when the distributor removed key scenes and re-scored the film), Age of Consent is now regarded as one of Powell's key works. Between his high-octane debut, Bad Boys, and 1998's wannabe blockbuster Armageddon, hotshot director Michael Bay forged his dubious reputation with this crowd-pleasing action extravaganza. In Rock, a psychotically disgruntled war hero (Ed Harris) seizes the island prison of Alcatraz and threatens to wage chemical warfare against nearby San Francisco unless the government publicly recognises the men who were killed under Harris's top-secret command. Nicolas Cage plays the biochemist who teams up with the only man ever to have escaped from Alcatraz (Sean Connery) in an attempt to foil Harris's terrorist scheme. As one might expect, what follows is an action-packed barrage of bullets, bodies, and climactic confrontations, replete with enough plot contrivances to give even the most jaded action fan cause for alarm. It's a load of hooey, but the cast is obviously having a grand old time, and there's enough wit to make the recycled action sequences tolerable. --Jeff Shannon
