Lennon NYC | Blu Ray | (24/10/2011)

| RRP The ultimate tribute to the ultimate music legend. When The Beatles split up in 1970, John Lennon found himself carrying the weight of public adoration and expectation, as the break-up of the world's most influential band left a hole at the centre of popular culture that he was expected to fill. Leaving his native Britain in 1971, he travelled - as so many had before him - to the city of New York for the chance of a new life. As with so many immigrants to the Big Apple, Lennon sought freedom: freedom to be himself, to leave the Beatles behind and to live his life as a husband, father and artist. This feature-length documentary, produced with complete support from Yoko Ono, tells the definitive story of Lennon's solo career and the artistic choices he made in his new adopted city. Featuring access to never-before-seen material from the Lennon archives, rare recordings of some of his greatest solo hits and interviews with the likes of Yoko Ono, Elton John and Ringo Starr, this is the ultimate portrait of John Lennon in his post-Beatle years.

| RRP The foundation stone of the Troma label's trash-movie empire, The Toxic Avenger introduces the character of nerdy janitor Melvin, who suffers heaps of abuse from local bad-guys and is stuffed into a vat of toxic waste while dressed in a ballerina outfit. He emerges mutated into a Swamp Thing/Hulk-style monster hero who romps around the blighted township of Tromaville, New Jersey, offing the grotesque villains in nastily gruesome ways and mooning over his blind true love. The Troma style is unique, and perhaps predates the anything-gross-for-a-laugh approach of the Farrelly Brothers by a good 10 years, but it sometimes wavers between the good-natured gags and genuinely unpleasant plot images that somewhat spoil the tone. Entry-level filmmaking, but with surprisingly professional head-squashing effects and a degree of enthusiasm that breaks down most resistance. Several sequels have ensued, including The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie. -- Kim Newman

| RRP Season 1: When the first series of Friends debuted in September 1994, it was immediately obvious there would be no need for the show to find its feet. "The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate" was a confident introduction to the six lead characters, opening in the middle of an everyday conversation with the soon-to-be uncharacteristic line: "There's nothing to tell". In fact, the soap opera-style plot got complicated pretty quickly, with spoiled brat Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) moving on from her failed wedding to feelings toward nerdy/heartthrob Ross (David Schwimmer). However, no love life was more complicated than Joey's (Matt LeBlanc), with an endless stream of girlfriends that annoyed the hell out of wisecracking roommate Chandler (Matthew Perry), who only seemed to be able to connect with Janice (Maggie Wheeler), the shrillest voice in the city. Bouncing all manner of neuroses around them were Ross' obsessive sister Monica (Courteney Cox) and endearingly ditzy Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow). Premise established, Series 1 matured the characters by providing a monkey and a son for Ross. We met also meet Ross and Monica's parents Jack (Elliott Gould) and Judy (Christina Pickles), Chandler's mother (Morgan Fairchild) and Phoebe's twin sister Ursula (Kudrow, naturally). Fans loved cameos from George Clooney, Jay Leno and show creators Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane. But really the focus was on building to "T.O.W. Rachel Finds Out" that Ross is in love with her. --Paul Tonks
Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle | DVD | (01/10/2001)
from £24.99
| Saving you £-5.00 (N/A%)
| RRP If nothing else, Doggystyle indicates a remarkable, if not exactly commendable, honesty in the relationship between Snoop Dogg and his fans. Snoop recognises that his absurdly wealthy, sexually indulged, permanently stoned persona is admired chiefly by priapic 14-year-old boys who don't understand why girls won't speak to them, and young men who think a booming car stereo is a signifier of awesome masculinity. He has delivered to these constituencies precisely the kind of video they would want. Doggystyle does not trouble itself with any actual promotional clips or artist interviews. Though Snoop occasionally deigns to wander in front of the camera and mime half-heartedly along to one of his songs, this is essentially a porn film, which is appropriate given that most of what Snoop has recorded in the last few years resembles uncannily the glutinous muzak that usually serves as a soundtrack for such things. It is not without amusement value, wholly inadvertent though this is--the editing of this "Soft" version of Doggystyle, intended to make it saleable in shops which are not patronised exclusively by men in overcoats, occasionally lends the joyless copulations of Snoop's mates a certain comedic appeal. --Andrew Mueller
