  This version of Jason and the Argonauts is not a remake of the classic 1963 Ray Harryhausen feature, but a new re-telling of the Greek legend. It takes just as many liberties with the saga, but--with a running time twice as long as the original--it packs in much more of the story, building to an exciting finale filled with betrayal, retribution and copious sword-play. Made by mini-series specialists Hallmark, who also produced a lavish version of Homer's The Odyssey (1997), only the rapid fades where the commercial breaks would be really give away the fact that this is a TV feature. The multinational cast is variable, and while Jason London is unhappily wooden in the title role, such stars as Denis Hopper and Frank Langella are good value, American accents aside. Coming straight from the big screen sword and sandal epic, Gladiator, Derek Jacobi adds sheer class, while Jolene Blalock makes a breathtaking debut as Medea. The visual atmosphere is strong; the superb cinematography varying between lush beauty and the stark, sun-bleached look of Pitch Black. Production values are excellent, with several increasingly powerful and spectacular action set-pieces incorporating outstanding (for TV) CGI effects, the whole being immeasurably lifted by British composer Simon Boswell's splendid musical score.--Gary S. D.G. embarks on a journey to find the great mystic man to save the O.Z. and on her way she befriends a scarecrow named Glitch a tin cop named Cain and gentle manimal named Raw.

  This is an impressive-looking version of Lewis Carroll's story originally produced for American television. Dreading a singing recital at her parents' lavish home, Alice falls into a strange world in pursuit of a large White Rabbit. The talented child actor Tina Majorino (Corrina, Corrina) plays Alice with all the good graces but mostly wanders through the story unquestioningly. Carroll's tale of whimsical, illogical adventures is a field day for designers Roger Hall and Alan Tomkins, costumer Charles Knode, Jim Henson's Creature Shop and director Nick Willing (Photographing Fairies). Influenced by Time Bandits and Labyrinth (the latter also designed by the Henson company), the film has a splendid array of effects, many dealing with multiple perspectives as Alice constantly changes sizes. The highlight is Whoopi Goldberg as the Cheshire Cat, a seamless mix of cat and comic. Martin Short as the Hatter and Mirandra Richardson as the Queen of Hearts seem to be having the times of their lives. This is not the definitive version of Carroll's tale, and, like the popular Disney animated version, combines some elements of Carroll's sequel, Through the Looking Glass. It is perhaps better viewing for the fan that has seen another version of the tale or read the book. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

  Back in 1991, Steven Spielberg came something of a cropper when he dug into the story of Peter Pan, and tried to establish what happened once everyone had grown up. Neverland has a lot more luck going the other way, though. It sets its story before the well known adventures of Peter Pan, and tries to find out just how he became who he was. To do this, it moves the story back to the start of the 20th Century, and crucially, pulls in a really impressive cast. Writer and director Nick Willing has brought together Charlie Rowe as Peter, along with Bob Hoskins as Smee--reprising the role he played in the aforementioned Hook. Then there's Anna Friel, Charles Dance, Keira Knightley voicing Tinkerbell, and Rhys Ifans stealing any scene he's let near as James Hook. It's Ifans who you long to see as much of on the screen, and Neverland doesn't disappoint. He does the role proud. This release sees the original mini-series brought together in one, and it's all the better for it. It's a rollicking adventure, with its ambitions firmly in entertaining a family audience. What's particularly impressive is that it finds interesting things to do with a bunch of characters familiar to most, if not all, of us to some extent. And, more than that, that familiarity adds to the fun. An excellent family adventure, with good, broad appeal. --Jon Foster
