  • Fierce Creatures [Blu-ray]Fierce Creatures | Blu Ray | (27/04/2015) from £7.99   |  Saving you £7.00 (87.61%)   |  RRP £14.99

In an attempt to catch lightning in a bottle, John Cleese wrote Fierce Creatures with the purpose of reuniting the comedic cast of A Fish Called Wanda. Media mogul (Kevin Kline) owns a London zoo. He demands that the park raise more profit, so the new zoo director (Cleese) orders that only dangerous animals be displayed in order to maximize ticket sales. In a dual role, Kline also plays the mogul's son, who plans to run the zoo with the help of displaced employees (including Michael Palin) and zoo programmer Willa Weston (Jamie Lee Curtis). The situation lends itself to comedic confusion and split-second timing, and for a few good laughs the film is a pretty safe bet. It's not as hilarious as A Fish Called Wanda (that's a pretty tall order), but Cleese knows comedy, and his efforts are worth a look. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

  • Robin of Sherwood: Jason Connery - [Network] - [ITV] - [Blu-ray]Robin of Sherwood: Jason Connery - | Blu Ray | (31/10/2011) from £34.98   |  Saving you £17.00 (51.53%)   |  RRP £49.99

A benchmark of quality television drama in the 1980s and arguably the definitive interpretation of the Robin Hood legend, this BAFTA-winning series is presented here for the first time in High Definition.Jason Connery stars as Robin Hood in Richard Carpenter's influential and highly acclaimed re-working of the classic myth. Combining equal parts high drama, historical accuracy and atmospheric mysticism, Carpenter's reboot pitched a band of not-so-Merry Men against a decidedly brutal and waspish Sheriff of Nottingham. With a haunting theme from Clannad, strong scripts and outstanding performances from Ray Winstone, Clive Mantle, Judi Trott and Nickolas Grace, to name a few, Robin of Sherwood was, and remains, a worldwide hit. With new HD transfers taken from the original film elements, the third and final series is presented here at a quality level never previously seen.

It is an offbeat, highly surreal number with oodles of blood and gore thrown in. A Transylvanian village is sealed off from the outside world due to an outbreak of the plague. Anyone who tries to get in or out is shot dead by the police. Nevertheless a travelling circus somehow breaks through the lines, and boy, are all its bloodless-looking performers a wee bit strange! There is a gypsy male who seems to be able to turn himself into a panther, and a pair of very creepy acrobatic twins, who seem impervious to pain and can transform themselves into birds. All of it is presided over by Adrienne Corri, who makes a suitably vampy Ring-Mistress. Added to all this the village itself is living under a curse imposed on them by an aristocrat they killed several years before for being a vampire, all of which is related in the violent and blood-splattered opening sequence to the film. A Creepy Hammer horror with bite! The second series of Robin of Sherwood sets up both a sense of melancholy for the impending departure of Michael Praed and excitement for his imminent replacement by Jason Connery. These seven episodes are the very best of Praed and co, building upon their established camaraderie and making forest-frolicking seem like TV's best ever gig. "The Prophecy" has a running thread of back plot that will explain Praed's Doctor Who-like transformation to Connery (and all so he could cameo in Dynasty). Mystical Herne predicts the death of a great king, but the merry men are more interested in the introduction of new semi-regular Prince John (Philip Davis). The series becomes braver as it continues by delving deeper into the black arts and exploring such matters as anti-Semitism and pagan beliefs. Gisburne's schemes to capture the bandits grow more desperate, while Herne's advice grows more cryptic and Marion's love for Robin grows stronger. All of which builds to the excellent two-part "The Swords of Wayland" and its coda "The Greatest Enemy". Now prepare yourself for something completely different. On the DVD: Robin of Sherwood's first box set was going to take some beating, but this second series set is as good as anyone has managed for a TV show on DVD. The digital transfers and new Dolby soundtracks (with optional original mono and music-only tracks) are fantastic. The commentary on "The Swords of Wayland" from the director and producer is insightful and endearing. The third part of the behind-the-scenes documentary, still interviewing everyone involved, is consistently fascinating and runs 42 minutes. Add to that two galleries of stills with 156 pictures, seven minutes of outtakes and, for curiosity value, the French and American versions of the Main Title sequence. You can tell some real heart has gone into this release. --Paul Tonks

  • Captain Jack [1998]Captain Jack | DVD | (11/02/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

Based loosely on a true story, Captain Jack is an Ealing-style whimsical comedy-drama about the triumph of everyday eccentrics. Captain Jack (Bob Hoskins) is a Whitby boat captain sick of hearing how the he wants to celebrate his predecessor's "discovery" of the Arctic by recreating his voyage on its 200th anniversary. Jack breaks harbour regulations and finds himself on the run from the Coastguard and Navy, accompanied by a crew of landlubbers including sisters played by Anna Massey and Gemma Jones. Sadie Frost is a passionate young stowaway who has her eye on Aussie Peter McDonald, while making up the party is David Troughton. Back on shore there are entertaining supporting roles for Patrick Malahide, Michelle Dotrice and Maureen Lipman, wife of writer Jack Rosenthal. Rosenthal screenplay isn't especially amusing, but he does manage to pack in all the expected feel-good developments, as well as including appropriate Dracula (1979) and Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) jokes. There's a whale, a pair of polar bears, a storm, lots of bonding and a gruff but warm-hearted sensibility throughout. Another winning piece of entertainment from Yorkshire, the county that gave the world The Full Monty. On the DVD: the only extra is a terribly British trailer, presented non-anamorphically. The main feature however is presented in an excellent 1.77:1 anamorphically enhanced widescreen transfer. The picture is crisp and detailed, with not a blemish anywhere. The stereo sound is everything this kind of film needs without being in anyway spectacular. --Gary S Dalkin
