Debutant director Sanjay Jhas film Pran Jaaye Par Shaan Na Jaaye takes a close look at the Mumbai chawls (squats) and the people living in them. There are 49 families comprising of 239 individuals living in a chawl. The conditions in which they live are pathetic. Yet in the most inhuman living conditions and lack of privacy the 49 families become a part of a bigger family. Joy sorrow grief and elation are what each member feels for the other. This film particularly takes a close look at the apathetic conditions that the women are made to live in. Seen through the eyes of a woman it tells us story about how a drunkard expects his wife to take care of him even though he beats her day in and day out. Another woman has to keep smiling even though her heart is filled with sadness. Yet another is ridiculed and taunted just because she is the breadwinner of the family. The oppression becomes too much and the woman decides to become the voice of the oppressed. . Apart from making a brief appearance in the film as a don Mahesh Manjrekar pens the script of the film that has music by Daboo Malik.
