With no apparent let up in the fascination for all things musically Cuban, Afro-Cuban Legends is a rather uneven but ultimately fascinating examination of the phenomenon. The first half, a 1998 South Bank Show documentary about the Afro-Cuban All Stars is wonderful, telling the story of young band leader Juan de Marcos Gonzáles and his efforts to reunite some of the stars of the golden age of Cuban music. The film works as much as travelogue as music documentary, painting a poignant portrait of a grand old city in decline--quite the opposite story of the musicians involved. Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González and Pio Leyva are all elderly artists who, having assumed that their moment had past, are clearly enjoying a second time in the sun. The story of their revival is both moving and inspiring (one of the best moments comes as Ferrer and González drive round Havana in an open topped car, raging about the US and its bully-boy tactics) and achieves that rare feat--a documentary that holds the interest whether or not the viewer is an aficionado of the music. The second half, a live concert recording of Company Segundo, is not quite so vital. A rather shaky television recording, the music lacks the spark and vitality of the Afro-Cuban All Stars and is strictly second division Cuban material. On the DVD: Chapter selection, a range of subtitles and a Web link are all that is on offer by the way of extras. Given that both programmes were made for television, the picture quality is not big budget standard. The South Bank Show is, however, beautifully shot and the DVD format makes the most of the impressive settings, both natural and architectural. The sound quality is crisp and clear, perfect for the series of musical performances. The Company Segundo segment suffers from the original's lack of production values, although the sound track is equally vibrant. --Phil Udell
Tony McManus has come to be recognized throughout the world as the leading guitarist in Celtic Music. To find a unique voice on so ubiquitous an instrument as the acoustic guitar is quite an achievement: to do so within a centuries old idiom where the instrument has no real history is truly remarkable. In a relatively short time Tony's music has come to define a new role for the guitar in Celtic music. He has come to represent Celtic music in the guitar world. He has appeared at Guitar Festivals in Soave and Pescantina Italy; Frankston Australia; Issoudun France; Kirkmichael Scotland; Bath and Kent England; Bochum and Osnabruck Germany. His ability to reach audiences unfamiliar with traditional music is remarkable- he is quite comfortable at predominantly classical events such as the Dundee and Derry Guitar Festivals (appearing six times between the two) and even The Bogota International Guitar Festival where he followed virtuoso Eduardo Fernandez. In this DVD Tony talks about his influences and approach to guitar playing as well as performing a wide array of tunes from jigs to reels to pop and jazz classics.
Keira Knightley stars as real-life model turned bounty hunter Domino Harvey in this thriller from director Tony Scott.

The Space Movie was made at the request of NASA to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 1969 Apollo 11 mission which carried Neil Armstrong Michael Collins and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin on a historic journey. NASA and The United States National Archive made all the footage available for the very first time including never before seen film of the lunar landscape life aboard the spacecraft the Space Shuttle Mars Venus and beyond. Even more importantly NASA released the extraordinary soundtracks of the all the conversations between the astronauts and ground control in Houston. The film's soundtrack was written arranged and performed by Mike Oldfield. He used extracts from his ground-breaking symphonic tonepoems such as 'Tubular Bells' and 'Hergest Ridge' including previously unreleased orchestral versions and wound these in and out of the NASA soundtracks together with new music which was eventually released on the in a different form on 'Incantations'. The result is a unique soundtrack for a unique film.
