  Chain up! Season 3 of this gripping HISTORY series gets plenty of traction from its setting, the more than 400-mile gauntlet of terror known as the Dalton Highway. Said to be the most dangerous road in North America, the Dalton has reportedly claimed a life for each of its miles. If the curves don't get you, the narrator intones in a dramatic John Wayne-like drawl, the avalanches will. The drivers, a right-stuff bunch (They don't pay us this much because it's easy, one proclaims), have 12 weeks to deliver more than 6,000 loads to the Prudhoe Bay oil fields before the ice roads thaw. Along with familiar grizzled ice road veterans Hugh and George from the show's first two seasons, season 3 shifts gears with its first female driver, the attractive Lisa Kelly, a motocross champion determined to prove herself as a heavy hauler in this male-dominated profession. The competition between the drivers to see who can make the most runs really takes a back seat to the potential calamities that await beyond every curve and over every steep incline. Pick the wrong gear, you wash out, the narrator cautions, hit the brakes too hard; you end up in a ditch. The road, it is said, never lets up, and neither does Ice Road Truckers. Photos of horrific crashes and computer-generated re-creations of serious accidents amp up the drama, but (spoiler alert), beyond tense moments driving through blinding storms or experiencing equipment malfunctions, the drivers emerge from this punishing season unscathed. Ice Road Truckers will especially appeal to truck enthusiasts who may have grown up with the Road Construction Ahead and There Goes a Truck videos. These drivers do some serious hauling (45,000 pounds is considered a light load) and it is fascinating, for example, to watch how 16-ton pipes are loaded and secured onto a flatbed. A feature film inspired by the series is reportedly in the works, but there's nothing like the real thing. --Donald Liebenson.

  This film is presented by historian and film-maker Ed Skelding who takes us on a chronological journey through the first two years of fighting in the salient. He is joined by renowned military historian and author Nigel Cave who will join Ed at some key locations where decisive actions took place. Nigel is well known for his contributions to the Battleground Europe series of guide books published by Pen & Sword. This film will feature locations associated with the first two battles of Ypres, including Hooge Chateau, Langemark and Gheluvelt where the first encounters between the opposing armies took place. The story of the 1914 Christmas truce will be explained by Nigel and the nearby locations where the artist Bruce Bairnsfather drew the cartoons that were to establish the character of Old Bill. Nigel is also interviewed at the notorious location of Hill 60, where he reads from his Battleground Europe book, and explains why this was such a dreaded place, even for the Salient. The second part of this film then switches to the Second Battle of Ypres in April 1915. This became notorious for the first real gas attack of the war and was to change the attitude of the British soldiers towards the Germans. Gone forever was any notion of chivalry. Nigel is interviewed at Vancouver Corner - where an impressive memorial to the Canadians who died defending the line despite suffering many casualties from the gas – now stands. He also takes us to the nearby Totemuhle or Death Windmill to explain where the gas attack came from and the resulting lost opportunity for the Germans. This film will also tell the story of the Royal Army Medical Corps and the doctors who did so much often in the most desperate circumstances.   Dušan Hanák's renowned film (voted 'the best Slovak film of all time' by critics in 2000) is a poetic visual essay on the forgotten peoples of remote villages in the Tatra Mountains. Inspired by the photographs of Slovak artist Martin Martinček (1913-2004) whose pictures distilled entire lifetimes into luminous intransient images Hanák creates his own distinctive impressions of the artist's work crafting a polyphony of human stories. The film documents the lives of nine old people - the textures of faces of hands and of landscape predominate alongside an obstinate vitality and desire for life. At odds with the Communist propaganda of the time its depiction of poverty punctuated with alcoholism religion and the hardships of the subjects' lives resulted in the film being withdrawn from release. Condemned for its 'aesthetics of ugliness' the film remained banned for many years. However Hanák's film is not a political polemical or even social film. It goes far deeper to more fundamental levels of human experience - its power and beauty lies in its unique portrait of a people who seem to have been forgotten by the modern world. Released for the first time ever in the UK the DVD is presented fom a new HD digital tansfer with restored picture and sound - plus new HD restorations of two of Dušan Hanák's acclaimed short films Mass (Omša 1967) and Old Shatterhand Came to Us (Prišiel k nám Old Shatterhand 1966).
