The North American P-51 Mustang was designed and built for Britain's Royal Air Force and the first production aircraft was flown in May 1941. Originally powered by a single Allison engine, the power plant was replaced by the British with the excellent Merlin engine. So successful was the upgrade that, when the U.S. itself ordered the P-51, the Army Air Forces adopted the Merlin and so was born what became probably the finest single-engined fighter aircraft series of the war. As the long-range component for the bomber escort mission, supported by the P-38 Lightning and P-47 Thunderbolt, the Mustang served throughout the European and Mediterranean theatres. Following the capture of Iwo Jima in the Pacific, the Mustangs partnered the massive B-29 Superfortress bombers in the skies over Japan. And, as enemy air-opposition over both Europe and Japan was whittled away, the P-51 Mustangs were released for attack against all types of ground targets with devastating results.

A look at Wolverhampton's Low Level Station before it closed is followed by a journey to Manchester via Stoke On Trent Crewe and Stockport. After Manchester we cross the Pennines and end our journey at Sheffield's Victoria Station where 'Directors' '04's' and 'K' class moguls were still hard at work.

  • Hitler's Secret Weapons Laboratory Peenemunde & The V2 [2008]Hitler's Secret Weapons Laboratory Peenemunde & The V2 | DVD | (27/04/2009) from £14.98   |  Saving you £-4.99 (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

The landing on the moon by the crew of Apollo 11 in July 1969 was one of mankind's greatest achievements. But the roots of this fantastic technological feat lie in a little German fishing village called Peenem''nde on the northern coast of the island of Usedom in Northern Germany. This was the site of a secret weapon development establishment which was the cradle of technology which made manned space flight possible in later years. Yet the legend that surrounds Peenem''nde is closely tied to death and destruction. It was on the 3rd October 1942 that the 'Aggregat 4' rocket - later called the V2 by Nazi propaganda officials - was successfully launched. It flew the distance of 147 kilometers and became the first man-made device to actually reach the borders of space. This programme uses imposing film material and exciting interviews to tell the story of the development work that was done in Peenem''nde and how the people close to Wernher von Braun and Walter Dornberger lived and worked. How did the Allies manage to discover some of the secrets of the weapons developed in Peenem''nde? Just how much influence did Hitler and Himmler have on the project? Which secret projects were still under development in spring 1945. and which weapon systems continued to be developed by the Americans after the war.

From the hangmen who plied their trade in Britain well into the 1960s, to the infamous 'Bourreaux' of France who killed over 1,000 people between them, and the shadowy figures operating in the United States, learn the truth behind the men who acted as the final barrier between life and death. Part 1 - The HangmanWhat did they do? Why did they do it? And what did it do to them? This is the story of the private executioners, a unique history of British capital punishment, seen through the eyes of those who dispensed it. Part 2 - Dynasties of DeathThey were not criminals, nor were they soldiers. They killed for money, but were not volunteers. Theirs was a grim and inescapable inheritance. They were the 'Bourreaux' - the executioners of France.
