Sometimes a discovery forever changes what we think we know, altering our perspective and re-writing history. In the summer of 2001, a natural history museum in the mid west made the find of a lifetime, one that would prove to be one of the world's rarest and most controversial dinosaurs. Rare, because it was the only skeleton of its kind ever found; controversial, because of the ensuing, worldwide debate as to its impact on prehistoric evolution and the scientific process used to unveil its ...

One of the most calamitous military campaigns ever undertaken was planned by an acknowledged military genius Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The invasion of hated Russia in 1812 involved an army of more than 500 000 men but less than 50 000 lived to see their homeland again. Was Napoleon undone by a dramatic loss of his military prowess? The answer is no - he was defeated by the freezing snows of a merciless Russian winter the most severe for more than one hundred years. The unimaginable misery of the infamous retreat from Moscow is vividly retold with the use of extensive film footage and period imagery. The events of 1941 proved that Hitler was no student of history for the fate suffered by his armies during the Russian campaign in the third year of World War Two was virtually identical to that which befell Napoleon some 130 years earlier. Sent to conquer the great enemy during the summer the German Army expected and was prepared for a swift decisive campaign but the Russians refused to buckle and the fighting dragged on. Soon the Germans supplied with only light summer clothing were faced with an enemy every bit as dangerous as the Red Army the savage Russian winter. This episode of 'The Weather At War' describes the effects of winter conditions on these disastrous campaigns and draws eerie similarities and coincidences between them both.

Available on DVD for the very first time the Discovery Channel's feature-length highly acclaimed documentary film Normandy: The Great Crusade offers one of the finest-ever accounts of D-Day and the battle for Normandy. The scale of the campaign was truly awe-inspiring. The great armada which took the Allied invasion force across the Channel was the largest sea fleet the world had ever seen - in excess of 6 000 ships. Over twelve and a half weeks in the summer of 1944 two million men fought first on the beaches and then in the fields of Normandy. 100 000 were killed and a further 300 000 wounded. Normandy: The Great Crusade provides a uniquely personal account of the battles and campaigns by bringing to life the personal letters and journals of those who fought - and sometimes died - on D-Day and in the weeks beyond. Here are the first hand accounts of British officers and men and American paratroopers and tank crews. Here too are the accounts of German soldiers manning the sea wall Hitler Youth soldiers fighting around Caen and French civilians caught up and trapped in the fighting. Their vivid and unforgettable stories are illustrated by the pick of front line combat footage private photographs and even the radio broadcasts of the time including Bob Hope commenting on the invasion.

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, first flown in May 1941, was the heaviest U.S. single-engined fighter of World War II. It was powered by a radial engine with, in its later variants, over 100 miles greater range on internal fuel than that of the P-38 Lightning. Known as The Jug, short for juggernaut, when fully loaded it could weigh over eight tons. The mighty Thunderbolt was certainly no dogfighter. However, armed with four Browning machine guns in each wing and with a diving speed that could outstrip any of the German piston-engined fighters, it proved very effective in escorting the Allied bomber streams over Nazi occupied Europe. After completing its leg of the fighter relay, the Thunderbolt was unleashed on any targets of opportunity it could find, its formidable firepower disrupting transport lines or destroying enemy aircraft caught on the ground. Later modifications saw the Thunderbolt able to carry its own bombs and it became increasingly used as a superb fighter-bomber.
