The Battle for Warsaw | DVD | (30/01/2012)
from £17.53
| Saving you £-4.54 (-34.90%)
| RRP This documentary traces the tragic story of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising in which nearly a quarter of a million Poles lost their lives. It includes much archive material that is rare and that has only recently come to light, as well as remarkable eye-witness accounts from some of the principal survivors. To many people, this uprising is one of the great and controversial epics of modern history. It was also the first skirmish in the Cold War and one of the earliest guerilla battles. Armed with only homemade or captured weapons and outnumbered by nearly three to one, the citizens of Warsaw held out for over two months against the German forces. Their goal was to liberate their capital for themselves before the Russians came. Although the Red Army was only ten miles away when the uprising began, Stalin chose to delay his capture of Warsaw and to ignore until too late the pleas for help from the Poles besieged there. It suited his scheme of things, of course, for the Germans to eliminate for him the bulk of the non-Communist Poles before his own troops arrived on the scene. After brutally ending the uprising, the Germans systematically raised Warsaw to the ground. However, the Poles have laboriously and painstakingly rebuilt their capital almost exactly how it was.

But by the early fifties Europe was back on its feet and the Italian marques of Alfa Romeo Maserati and Ferrari to whom racing was a life blood re-entered the sport. Britain with little tradition of race car building started small... very small... the tiny Cooper using a 500 cc motor-cycle engine. In this fascinating DVD with the aid of often previously unseen archive film and unique interviews with the drivers themselves plus comments from colleagues competitors and race team managers and owners we meet many of those great names who are The British Legends of Motor Sport.

The Weather At War - Rain: Enemy Or Ally? | DVD | (09/03/2009)
from £9.68

| RRP This simple word rain which means nothing to the civilian with a roof over his head this simple word encapsulates the horror of the men in the field'. So wrote one miserable soldier in the early 20th Century and his sentiments have been shared not only by generations of ordinary fighting men but also by the commanders whose battle plans have been thrown into disarray when the heavens opened. This episode of 'The Weather At War' explores the effects of rain on some of the most crucial battles and campaigns in history. The Battle of Agincourt in 1415 saw a small depleted and vulnerable English force come face-to-face with a French army outnumbering them 3 to 1. Yet thanks to the sudden onset of heavy rain and some French over eagerness one of the biggest upsets in military history saw Henry V's troops inflict a heavy defeat on his enemy. The French were again on the unfortunate end of a change in weather some 300 years later when once more the two old foes met this time at Waterloo. For all Napoleon's undoubted military brilliance even he could not control the weather. This DVD also looks at how rain affected the great campaigns of World War Two including the D-Day landings the fight for Italy and the campaign in Burma proving modern warfare is no less susceptible to the impact of a sudden or prolonged downpour.
Lost Worlds | DVD | (26/07/2010)

| RRP The monuments of the ancient world are virtually brought back to life in Lost Worlds, a fantastic History Channel series that combines historical expertise and computer-generated imagery to restore ancient structures to their original condition. Just as the packaging promises, this riveting series allows viewers to "explore the past rebuilt in stunning detail," following a format as richly educational as it is visually impressive. The episodes are loosely grouped by historical epoch, beginning with the Christian, with episodes focussing on "The Knights Templar" (showing the virtual reconstruction of the city of Tortosa), "Jesus' Jerusalem" (focusing on Herod's temple Mount, the Via Dolorosa, and other places where Jesus traveled), and "The First Christians," in which the cities of Tarsus and Ephesus are studied and rebuilt, along with the mysterious cave dwellings of Cappadocia, where some of the earliest Christian churches were built. The collection moves to ancient Greece and Egypt, where new theories connect the remains of a Cretan temple to the lost city of Atlantis; "Ramses' Egyptian Empire" shows us brilliant revivals of the temples of Karnak and Abu Simbel; and "Athens: Ancient Supercity" focuses on 5th-century B.C. Greek structures like the Parthenon and the Senate. The set then jumps forward to the architectural mysteries of World War II, uncovering the top-secret, high-security structures built in the United States to support the development and construction of the atom bomb; "Hitler's Supercity" of Germania, the Fuhrer's Greco-Roman dream that never came to pass, yet remains evident in the massive structures of the Third Reich; and "Churchill's Secret Bunkers" beneath the streets of London, a fascinating network of underground tunnels used as an allied command center impervious to German bombing raids. Next it focuses on the enigmatic histories of Europe, with episodes on "The Real Dracula" (rebuilding the remote Romanian castle of the notorious "Vlad the Impaler"); "Braveheart's Scotland" demonstrates how 13th-century Scottish culture was far more sophisticated than its depiction in Mel Gibson's popular OscarĀ®-winning film Braveheart; and "The Pagans" offers an in-depth history of the British Isles, where the pagan people built astonishing, spiritually vital structures like Stonehenge. A bonus episode--the series pilot--focuses on Palenque, the magnificent Mayan temple-city that rises from the jungle of Chiapas, Mexico. In each of these episodes, historians, architects, and engineers are consulted as on-screen guides to our fascinating journeys to the past. The result is a detailed narrative that combines social, religious, political, and technological aspects of history, until the magic moment arrives when all of this information is used (along with detailed CGI imagery) to unveil these important structures in their pristine form--in many cases more colourful and architecturally impressive than anyone could imagine. All of this makes Lost Worlds a richly rewarding experience, essentially the next best thing to owning a time machine. --Jeff Shannon
