  • Horses - A Year In The Lives Of Three Irish Racehorses [DVD] [2009]Horses - A Year In The Lives Of Three Irish Racehorses | DVD | (05/04/2010) from £12.93   |  Saving you £2.06 (13.70%)   |  RRP £14.99

Written and directed by acclaimed documentary film maker Liz Mermin (Shot in Bombay) this intimate observational film draws us into the inner lives of three thoroughbred racehorses over the course of a difficult racing year focusing not on jockeys or trainers but on the horses themselves. Ireland's horse-racing culture has produced some of the finest athletes in the world. The protagonists prove less reticent than one might imagine and as we watch them train rest play and race distinct characters undeniably emerge. The equine characters Cuan Na Grai Ardalan and Joncol are framed by a charismatic collection of human supporting actors - from their good-looking foul-mouthed trainer to an elderly groom who obviously prefers horses to people - but ultimately the horses command our attention on their own. Eschewing sentimentality Horses raises basic questions about what constitutes character and who can have it.

As the youth tried to break out of the confines set by the previous generation the old were puzzled by the sometimes outrageous behaviour of the young. The establishment and the younger generation seemed intent on colliding. This award nominated documentary tries to explain what went on more particularly in Berkeley California which at the time seemed to be at the epicentre of some of the changes and the birth pangs of a new generation and covers subjects like The Black Panthers the student movement and free speech movement and of course the anti war movement. Interviews with Allen Ginsberg Mario Savio and Huey Newton all give their impressions on what it was like in California during the sixties A time of almost revolution With a backdrop of some of the most exciting music to come out of the sixties from bands like Jefferson Airplane the Grateful Dead Joan Baez and many more. This series of programmes tells the complete story of World War II through fascinating archive footage that has become a living history of the incredible series of events that shaped the future of the entire human race. It's impossible to discuss the military implications of World War II without considering the dramatic impact of the Americans entering the conflict at the end of 1941 after the devastating attack on the US Navy at Peal Harbour by the Japanese. Nevertheless right from the outbreak of war in 1939 the Americans played a huge supporting role when it came to the Allied cause. With President Franklin Roosevelt working closely with Winston Churchill and the British as Hitler stormed through Europe the financial muscle of the USA was flexed long before the GIs were called upon to leave their homeland. As Roosevelt campaigned for freedom against tyranny providing loans for re-armament after such disasters as Dunkirk the fight against Nazi Germany was able to continue as the tide gradually started to turn in the Allies' favour. This fascinating documentary explores the role of the Americans in WWII and the intriguing larger than life Generals including George S Patton Omar Bradley and the legendary Dwight D Eisenhower as they did everything in their power to fulfil the American Dream.

A German infantry corporal in the trenches during World War One had been impressed by the capabilities of the tank - his name was Adolf Hitler. Under his rule the Panzer was developed and of this series the Panzer IV was by far the most important and could fight on equal terms with anything but some of the heavier Russian Tanks. One of the major reasons for the eventual German defeat was the Soviet T-34 medium tank generally thought of as the best all-round tank of World War Two. Early British WWII medium tanks were rather lightweight and the first true medium tank was the Vickers' Valentine. The Allies eventually developed the M4 Sherman to match the Panzer IV but by this time the Germans had developed more advanced machines of their own. Despite this the Sherman played a decisive role in winning the war due mainly to the sheer volumes produced. The old Sherman was followed after the war by the M48 and M60 and then first entering service in 1965 but still going strong the S-tank. This is almost certainly the end of the medium tank since more recent weapons have resulted in the evolution of much heavier battle tanks designed to cope with helicopters and other aircraft.
