This is the final chapter of Napoleon Bonaparte's extraordinary life - a chapter that begins with his enforced exile on the island of Elba. He busied himself building forts and bridges winning the support of the local population and making plans for a return to France. When he did return it was to an ecstatic welcome from his former troops and it was not long before he was reinstated as Emperor and at war once again. But there was to be no glorious ending to the tale - instead it ended in spectacular and bloody failure in June 1815 on the famous battlefield of Waterloo. Napoleon's old enemy the Duke of Wellington once again beat his forces and this time there was no way back. Napoleon died in exile on St. Helena just six years later but the legend of his military genius had only just begun.

  • Ocean's Eleven - The Documentary [2000]Ocean's Eleven - The Documentary | DVD | (18/02/2002) from £17.97   |  Saving you £-4.99 (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

Released to coincide with Steven Soderbergh's classy remake, The Ocean's Eleven Story is a fascinating American television documentary that sets the original Ocean's Eleven film in its historical context. Despite the opportunistic title, the film itself only constitutes part of the story and is featured in only the briefest of clips--none of which include any dialogue. Despite this--and the rather shoddy nature of the interview footage--there is still enough excellent archive material and interesting stories to make The Ocean's Eleven Story a worthwhile proposition. Placing the film in the context of the whole "Rat Pack" period, the documentary also looks at the role of Sinatra and company in the political rise of the Kennedy clan, the involvement of the Mafia and their heady days in Las Vegas. It also focuses on the individual lives of the five principal members--Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop--and is particularly poignant with regard to Davis, who was treated as a god on stage but with utter contempt off it. This is maybe not the greatest piece of documentary film making ever made, but with a subject this engaging it would be difficult to fail. On the DVD: Despite the quality of much of the material involved (particularly the film of the Rat Pack performing in Las Vegas), there is a rather rushed feel to the release. DVD extras are minimal, featuring merely some dated TV footage and some equally odd trailers for other films starring the five. --Phil Udell

  • The Weather At War - Mud-The Great LevellerThe Weather At War - Mud-The Great Leveller | DVD | (09/03/2009) from £8.06   |  Saving you £1.93 (19.30%)   |  RRP £9.99

In January 1863 during the American Civil War Unionist General Burnside attempted to retake the town of Fredericksburg committing 75 000 troops to the task. His endeavour would go down in history not as a military triumph but as a debacle known as the three day 'Mud March'. Heavy rains turned the surrounding area into a sticky bog and after nearly 72 hours of effort they'd only managed to bury themselves knee-deep in mud. At the battle of Passchendaele in July 1917 a sea of mud could be clearly seen before the fighting began. The battlefield had been turned into a quagmire due to the unrelenting shelling and then made worse by the destruction of the Flemish drainage system. Yet still the troops were committed to battle in conditions that it has been said were more suited to naval warfare. Unceasing rain turned the trenches that had become home to the men of both sides during the Great War into rivers of stinking clinging freezing rat-infested mud subjecting them to a new enemy - trench foot. A similar fate befell Hitler's army as he invaded Russia some 25 years later in Operation Barbarossa. The infamous rasputitsa the great thaw following the Russian winter brought his troops to an abrupt halt as men horses and machines were unable to wade through the marshy terrain.
