  The infantry has always had the worst of any war. Even so by the 1930's planners decided to make the infantry a more effective weapon and the British Government had the Carden-Lloyd Carrier developed. The German Blitzkrieg took this development a quantum leap further with the Hanomag armoured personnel carrier (APC) employed by Rommel's Afrika Korps. The British response was the half-ton Universal carrier. The Soviet Union created the amphibious BMP series since the Red Army knew that if ever invaded West Europe it would have a lot of rivers to cross. The United States produced the M1-13 in the early 1960s the longest serving and most widely exported personnel carrier of all time which saw active service in the Gulf War in 1991. It was the first vehicle in the world to use aluminium armour to reduce weight and is fully amphibious. To compliment it the M2 Bradley emerged in 1981 after 20 years of development. Equipped with a chain-gun capable of firing 600 rounds a minute and 2 TOW missile launchers the Bradleys together with the British Warriors swept through Iraqi minefields with such speed that Saddam's troops were unable to deploy. Within a week the armoured infantry mission was accomplished.

Each set offers three documentary films with a total running time of just under three hours. The films contain rare and recently discovered archive film and are packed with vivid combat footage, providing a strong companion series to the television classic The World At War. The material is almost entirely black and white, and the picture quality, which is dependent on the source materials, is as good as can be expected. Volume 1: "The Lightning Campaign" is the story of a method of warfare, the Blitzkrieg, and period of time, the first ten months of WWII, during which German forces invaded and overran seven countries. The film ranges from Poland in September 1939, to the fall of Paris in the summer of 1940. "The Air Campaign" dilutes its powerful visual impact by trying to pack too much in, seeking to cover every aspect of aerial warfare from the Battle of Britain to the atomic bombing of Japan. "The Desert Campaign" is exclusively focused on the war in North Africa and benefits considerably by this more focused approach. There are 12 extra features: three new shorts on "The Stormtrooper", "The Panzer" and "The Dive Bomber", and nine wartime propaganda films covering air combat and the desert campaign. The films average around four minutes each and are fascinating viewing, particularly one showing the desert war from the German point of view. --Gary S Dalkin
