It has been 100 years since the start of the First World War. More than 10 million people lost their lives between 1914 and 1918, and twice as many were injured or crippled. The First World War was a significant theme for the film artists of the Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft (DEFA), the East German film company founded in 1946. The suffering of working people, the misery of life in the factories and poor accommodation in cities, the growing organisation of resistance to warmongers and profiteers, as well as the battle for a better world are the topics of this extraordinary collection of films. THE KAISER S LACKEY: Submissiveness and petty bourgeois behaviour were part of the apparatus of oppression that kept the German Empire running and stabilised its hierarchy. Industrialist s son Diederich HeÃling, hero of this extraordinary film, is a cowardly and conventional career-opportunist. His path to power is that of the lickspittle he seeks the recognition of all above him, denounces competitors, and becomes the despot of both his inherited paper factory and his own family. Heinrich Mann s grand novel The Kaiser s Lackey, about a typical fellow traveller who uncritically idolises the Kaiser and shares his ambitions for world power was sympathetically filmed by director Wolfgang Staudte. A clever and amusing piece of cinema and a world success. THE GIRLS IN GINGHAM: The increase in industrialisation in the Germany of the early 20th century made the difference in poor and rich much more apparent. The life of simple people was hard. The focal point of The Girls in Gingham is Guste, who, as a maid, has to look after her lords and ladies. When the First World War breaks out, her husband is conscripted. Guste has to support the whole family by toiling as a hand-grenade maker. The young woman soon grasps that she is working for the continuation of this senseless war. She quits... The Girls in Gingham is a cinematographic journey through time and empire, through war, economic crisis, the rise of Nazi fascism and into a further, even crueller Second World War. It is a tense, moving and dramatic story.
The famous Tiger tanks of the German Panzer forces were only available at the hard pressed front in modest quantities but this tiny force forged a legend out of all proportion to its size.
One of histories most famous battles also saw the death of one of its most colourful characters - the charismatic and flamboyant George Armstrong Custer. Desperate to win a victory to restore his flagging reputation Custer trusted his luck once too often with disastrous consequences for the once-feted hero and the men under his command. Never before had the Indian tribes won such a spectacular victory over the white man but as history reveals the victory would cost them dearly. Thi

The Ganges River (Gang Ma or Great Mother) is the holiest river in the world. Rising from the pure glacial meltwaters of the Himalayas it flows down onto India's Northern Plain then heads eastwards into the swamplands of Bangladesh finally discharging a 500-km (310-mile) tongue of red silt into the Bay of Bengal. As well as filling wells and irrigating crops to sustain the cities and villages along its banks it is the spiritual life-blood for India's primary religion Hinduism. Bathing in the Ganges remains the lifelong ambition of many of India's believing masses who consider the river to be a living goddess. People gather daily at her banks to murmur prayers baptise children wash vibrant coloured saris drink her waters or simply die - believing such acts help absolve sins and lead the way to Nirvana. Ganges reveals the source of the river high in the Himalayas - the youngest mountain range in the world - and follows its route as it sharply incises the mountains on its journey south-east. Along the way we discover the Hindu story of the river's creation and how it supports the myriad forms of life that thrive on its banks.
Villains, gangsters or Faces as they prefer to be called, are the men, gang and family members who have made headlines over the past 50 years for all the wrong reasons. Some are household names: the Krays, the Richardsons, Paul Ferris, Frankie Fraser, Arthur Thompson and Vic Dark. Many you will not recognise, but the mere mention of these people has struck fear into individuals and entire communities. Despite their notoriety, the faces of Britain's most feared criminals remain largely unknown. That is until now. British Gangsters: Faces of the Underworld exposes these men. Presented by Bernard O'Mahoney, best-selling true crime author and former member of the Essex Boys Firm, Britain's most infamous and influential characters, crooks and businessmen are interviewed for the first time, many of whom have never appeared on camera before. Special Features: Exclusive Behind The Scenes Footage Interviews Photo Galleries
Black Country Communion, the English-American rock group featuring the talents of bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Trapeze), blues rock guitarist/vocalist Joe Bonamassa, drummer Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin), and keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater), now release their much-anticipated concert DVD and Blu Ray, ‘Live Over Europe’. The performances were filmed with 14 HD cameras during the summer of 2011 in the German cities of Hamburg, Munich and Berlin. Producer Kevin Shirley explains, “we saw that this live act could be an awesome force of nature to behold; that promised legendary performances like those of our heroes of Classic Rock (and I have seen some of my all time favourite performances at a Black Country Communion gig because they are that good). The plan was to get them out there, for the world to hear. Records allow a certain musical finesse, but live performance promises so much in the very transient nature of a gig - chances are taken, boundaries are crossed - and the most exciting performances explode. Two studio albums would build a repertoire big enough for a full concert and then we could unleash the monster for all the world to see and feel... so here it is!” Track Listing: 1.
