I ONLY GOT ONE LAW: A KID WHO TELLS ON ANOTHER KID IS A DEAD KID. Inspired by real-life incidents, Over The Edge is an incendiary ode to teen rebellion that quickly became a Gen X/punk-rock touchstone, and a key influence on filmmakers such as Richard Linklater and musicians like Kurt Cobain (who often cited it as his favourite film). New Granada is a brand new ˜planned community', miles from the noise and crime of the big city and a perfect place to raise a family. The only problem is they forgot to build anything for the kids to do. Bored out of their minds and stuck in the middle of nowhere, the teens in the town, led by Carl (Michael Kramer) and Richie (an effortlessly charismatic Matt Dillon in his first film role), do pretty much anything to fill the time, quickly escalating from drugs and sex to petty crime. A rash action by an overzealous local police officer (Harry Northup, Taxi Driver) sets in motion a face-off between the frustrated kids and their clueless parents that will lead to explosive, destructive consequences... Armed with a classic ˜70s rock soundtrack (including Cheap Trick, Ramones and Van Halen), energetic direction by Jonathan Kaplan (White Line Fever) and an intelligent script by Tim Hunter (River's Edge) and Charlie Haas (Matinee), Over The Edge still packs a righteously powerful punch today, and makes its worldwide Blu-Ray debut with brand new bonus features interviewing the cast and crew. A brutal bloody and gripping saga of obsession corruption and poisonous greed; Paul Thomas Anderson's Award Winning There Will Be Blood is a masterly unwavering inspection of a consummately evil man whose trailblazing spirit is equalled only by his murderous ambition. In the dying years of the nineteenth century Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) a struggling silver miner realises that true wealth lies in oil extraction. Driven by a passionate hatred for others and an intense psychological need to see competitors fail he heads for the oil-rich land of California in a bid to manipulate and exploit the landowners of dust-worn Little Boston in to selling him their properties. Forefront of the town is self-styled `faith healer' Eli Sunday (Paul Dano) who is structuring his own sinister plan to funnel the residents' impending wealth into his self-founded church. As Plainview's empire expands so does his obsession with the intrinsic value of power and he becomes increasingly irascible and paranoid along the way. What follows is a vindictive ruthless and violent chain of events as Plainview fails to deliver on promises as he pits himself against the town's perturbed and unstable charismatic teenage preacher. In addition to stunning visuals and an exceptional captivating score from accomplished composer (and Radiohead guitarist) Jonny Greenwood director Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia) owes his best work to date to the incredible Academy Award winning performance as Plainview by Daniel Day-Lewis and the staggering portrayal of Eli Sunday by Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine). Bearing similarities to Citizen Kane and Giant There Will Be Blood is an intelligent thought-provoking and powerfully-eccentric epic masterpiece that is as enchanting as it is timeless.

Gian Maria Volonté (A Fistful of Dollars) stars in one of provocative filmmaker Elio (Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion) Petri's most politically charged films as factory worker Lulu: a man on the verge of a nervous breakdown, following an accident at work. Too tired to sleep with his girlfriend, cut out of his son's life by his ex, humiliated and disrespected, The Working Class Go to Heaven is an oftentimes surreal and darkly comic look at the life of an everyday Italian trying to find a sense of purpose in a world where he is only allowed to be a tool for industry. A savage takedown of capitalism and industrial corruption, the film was recipient of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or and features a gloriously unhinged, award-winning performance from Volonté, accompanied by an exceptional score by Ennio Morricone and stunning cinematography by Luigi Kuveiller (Deep Red). Jordan as the son of Apollo Creed, and explores a new chapter in the Rocky story, starring Academy Award nominee Sylvester Stallone in his iconic role. Despite his insistence that he is out of the fight game for good, Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollothe fierce rival who became his closest friend. Agreeing to take him on, Rocky trains the young fighter, even as the former champ is battling an opponent more deadly than any he faced in the ring. With Rocky in his corner, it isn't long before Adonis gets his own shot at the title but can he develop not only the drive but also the heart of a true fighter, in time to get into the ring? • Henry V [1989]Henry V | DVD | (17/06/2002) from £6.54   |  Saving you £3.45 (52.75%)   |  RRP £9.99

Very few first-time film directors would have been capable of making such a triumphant adaptation of Henry V; but a still-youthful Kenneth Branagh's years of stage experience paid off handsomely and his 1989 version qualifies as a genuine masterpiece, the kind of film that comes along once in a decade. He eschews the theatricality of Laurence Olivier's stirring, fondly remembered 1945 adaptation to establish his own rules: Branagh plays it down and dirty, seeing the Bard's play through revisionist eyes, framing it as an anti-war story in contrast to Olivier's patriotic spectacle. Branagh gives us harsh close-ups of muddied, bloody men, and of himself as Henry, his hardened mouth and wilful eyes revealing much about the personal cost of war. Not that the director-star doesn't provide lighter moments: his scenes introducing the French Princess Katherine (Emma Thompson) trying to learn English quickly from her maid are delightful. What may be the crowning glory of Branagh's adaptation comes when the dazed leader wanders across the battlefield, not even sure who has won. As King Hal carries a dead boy (a young Christian Bale) over the hacked bodies of both the English and French, a panorama of blood and mud and death greet the viewer as Branagh opens up the scene and Patrick Doyle's rousing hymn "Non nobis, Domine" provides marvellous counterpoint (like the director, the composer was another filmic first-timer). A more potent expression of the price of victory could scarcely be imagined. --Rochelle O'Gorman, Amazon.com
