  • Goodbye Mr Chips [2002]Goodbye Mr Chips | DVD | (21/05/2007) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

James Hilton's beloved novel Goodbye Mr Chips is tenderly remade here in this 2002 TV production. Martin Clunes plays the schoolteacher over a 50-year period, from his first day as a novice Latin instructor until his death at 83 as retired headmaster. The world and Mr Chipping change dramatically over the decades. He marries a proto-feminist (Victoria Hamilton) who nicknames him "Chips" and gives him courage to test his humanitarian impulses. World War I hits home in many ways--a long list of the school's graduates die or are maimed and Chips struggles with the discriminatory exile of his best friend, the German teacher. Despite obvious breaks for commercials, this film has a graceful honesty that transcends the sometimes sentimental storyline. The casual cruelty at the all-boys' school may make parents flinch more than their children, rendering this a safe choice for family viewing. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Braithwaite) about a rookie teacher who throws out stock lesson plans and really takes command of his unruly, adolescent students in a London school. Sidney Poitier is very good as a man struggling with the extent of his commitment to the job, and even more as a teacher whose commitment is to proffering life lessons instead of just academic ones. The spirit of this movie can also be found in more recent films such as Dangerous Minds and Mr. Holland's Opus, but none are as moving as this. Besides, the others don't have a title song performed by Lulu, who also stars. --Tom Keogh

Charles Burnett's 1990 masterpiece, a family drama suffused with magical realism. A slowburning masterwork of the early 1990s, this third feature by Charles Burnett (Killer of Sheep) is a singular piece of American mythmaking. In a towering performance, Danny Glover (The Color Purple) plays the enigmatic southern drifter Harry, a devilish charmer who turns up out of the blue on the South Central Los Angeles doorstep of his old friends. In short order, Harry's presence turns a seemingly peaceful household upside down, exposing smouldering tensions between parents and children, tradition and change, virtue and temptation. Interweaving evocative strains of gospel and blues with rich, poeticrealist images, To Sleep with Anger is a sublimely stirring film from an autonomous artistic sensibility, a portrait of family resilience steeped in the traditions of black mysticism and folklore. Features: New, restored 4K digital transfer, approved by director Charles Burnett, with 2.0 surround DTSHD Master Audio soundtrack New interview programme featuring Burnett, actors Danny Glover and Sheryl Lee Ralph, and associate producer Linda Koulisis A Walk with Charles Burnett, a new hourlong conversation between Burnett and filmmaker Robert Townsend that revisits Burnett's films and shooting locations Short video tribute to Burnett produced for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Governors Awards ceremony in 2017 PLUS: An essay by critic Ashley Clark

  • The Fault In Our Stars / Juno / 500 Days Of Summer - 3 Film Collection [DVD]The Fault In Our Stars / Juno / 500 Days Of Summer - 3 Film Collection | DVD | (17/11/2014) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £27.99

The Fault In Our Stars Hazel (Shailene Woodley) and Gus (Ansel Elgort) share a sarcastic sense of humour a distaste for convention and ultimately a love that will sweep them onto a transformative journey that they – and you – will never forget. Although the two teens face extraordinary challenges their courage and dedication to each other prove that while life isn’t perfect love is. Laura Dern (TV’s Enlightened The Master) and Willem Dafoe (Out of the Furnace Spider-Man films) also star in this powerfully moving film based on John Green’s best-selling novel. Juno Don’t miss the outrageously offbeat comedy hit that has everyone talking— and laughing! Juno MacGuff (Ellen Page - X-MEN) is a cool confident teenager who takes a nine-month detour into adulthood when she’s faced with an unplanned pregnancy—and sets out to find the perfect parents for her baby. With the help of her charmingly unassuming boyfriend (Michael Cera – Superbad) supportive dad (J.K. Simmons) and no-nonsense step mum (Allison Janney) Juno sets her sights on an affluent couple (Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman) longing to adopt their first child. 500 Days of Summer In this anti-romantic comedy about love and fate a young greeting card writer (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is hopelessly helplessly searching for the girl of his dreams...and his new co-worker Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel) may just be “the one.” But the 500 days of their offbeat relationship reveal (in no particular order) that the road to happiness can be unpredictable uncontrollable — and unbelievably funny! This is not a love story. This is a story about love. Features songs from The Smiths Doves Regina Spektor and The Temper Trap.

  • On The Waterfront [1954]On The Waterfront | DVD | (10/12/2001) from £4.99   |  Saving you £5.00 (100.20%)   |  RRP £9.99

Marlon Brando's famous "I coulda been a contenda" speech in On the Water Front is such a war horse by now that a lot of people probably feel they've seen the film already, even if they haven't. And many of those who have seen it may have forgotten how flat-out thrilling it is. For all its great dramatic and cinematic qualities, and its fiery social criticism, Elia Kazan's has created one of the most gripping melodramas of political corruption and individual heroism ever made in the United States, a five-star gut-grabber. Shot on location around the docks of Hoboken, New Jersey, in the mid-1950s, it tells the fact-based story of a longshoreman (Brando's Terry Malloy) who is blackballed and savagely beaten for informing against the mobsters who have taken over his union and sold it out to the bosses. (Karl Malden has a more conventional stalwart-hero role, as an idealistic priest who nurtures Terry's pangs of conscience.) Lee J Cobb, who created the role of Willy Loman in Death of Salesman under Kazan's direction on Broadway, makes a formidable foe as a greedy union leader. --David Chute, Amazon.com
