  • Germany, Pale Mother [DVD]Germany, Pale Mother | DVD | (25/05/2015) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Set during the Third Reich and its aftermath this lyrical harrowing tale of love and war is a neglected classic of New German cinema. Hans and Lene scarcely have time to meet and marry before Hans is sent away to fight leaving Lene to give birth during an air raid and struggle through the war with a baby daughter. Based on director and writer Helma Sanders-Brahms’ mother’s experience the film explores the devastating impact of politics on family life. Eva Mattes (Lene) gives a brilliant fearless performance with the film casting a powerful emotional spell which is intensified by a delicate plaintive piano score. German critics savaged the film at its premiere baulking at its ‘subjective’ female take on recent history. Cut by 30 minutes for cinema release only now has it been restored to its impressive original form and released for the first time on DVD. Bonus Features: Germany Pale Mother: original director’s cut (Helma Sanders-Brahms 1980 145 minutes) Hermann Mein Vater (Helma Sanders-Brahms 1987 50 mins) Extensive booklet with essays and complete film credits

  • Lion Of The Desert [1980]Lion Of The Desert | DVD | (05/09/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Destined to remain a dubious footnote in books of movie trivia, Lion of the Desert--an occasionally impressive epic from 1981--was financed with a budget of $35 million by Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi, who previously attempted the role of movie producer with the critically roasted Mohammad: Messenger of God. This effort didn't fare much better (it grossed approximately $1 million worldwide), and although some of its wartime action sequences are intelligently filmed, it's not likely to gain much more of a reputation on home video. Under a shaggy Muslim beard, Anthony Quinn stars as Omar Mukhtar, the Arab hero and guerrilla fighter who defended Libya against Benito Mussolini and Italy's attempted conquests during World War II. As straightforward biography, the movie's got an admirable epic sweep, but a cliché-ridden script and uniformly bad performances (from a cast that includes John Gielgud, Oliver Reed and Rod Steiger) make this little more than a curiosity for those wanting to learn more about Libyan history. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

  • PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, THE [LA PASSION DE JEANNE D'ARC] (Masters of Cinema)(DVD)PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, THE | DVD | (26/11/2012) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £17.99

One of the most emotional film experiences of any era, Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1928 The Passion of Joan of Arc is a miracle of the cinema, an enigmatic and profoundly moving work that merges the worlds of the viewer and of saintly Joan herself into one shared experience of hushed delirium.Dreyer's film charts the final days of Joan of Arc as she undergoes the degradation that accompanies her trial for charges of heresy - through her imprisonment and execution at the stake. The portrayal of Joan by Rene Maria Falconetti is frequently heralded as the all-time finest performance in the history of film, and Dreyer's unusual and virtuosic method, in seeming to render the very soul of his actress, vaulted the director decisively into the ranks of the art form's supreme geniuses. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present The Passion of Joan of Arc in its worldwide Blu-ray premire, in an exclusive new restoration, presented in both 20fps and 24fps playback speeds.

  • Jackie Brown [1998]Jackie Brown | DVD | (22/01/2001) from £7.95   |  Saving you £10.04 (55.80%)   |  RRP £17.99

The curiosity of Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown is Robert Forster's worldly wise bail bondsman Max Cherry, the most alive character in this adaptation of Elmore Leonard's Rum Punch. The Academy Awards saw it the same way, giving Forster the film's only nomination. The film is more "rum" than "punch" and will certainly disappoint those who are looking for Tarantino's trademark style. This movie is a slow, decaffeinated story of six characters glued to a half million dollars brought illegally into the country. The money belongs to Ordell (Samuel L Jackson), a gunrunner just bright enough to control his universe and do his own dirty work. His just-paroled friend--a loose term with Ordell--Louis (Robert De Niro) is just taking up space and could be interested in the money. However, his loyalties are in question between his old partner and Ordell's doped-up girl (Bridget Fonda). Certainly Fed Ray Nicolette (Michael Keaton) wants to arrest Ordell with the illegal money. The key is the title character, a late-40-ish flight-attendant (Pam Grier) who can pull her own weight and soon has both sides believing she's working for them. The end result is rarely in doubt, and what is left is two hours of Tarantino's expert dialogue as he moves his characters around town. Tarantino changed the race of Jackie and Ordell, a move that means little except that it allows Tarantino to heap on black culture and language, something he has a gift and passion for. He said this film is for an older audience although the language and drug use may put them off. The film is not a salute to Grier's blaxploitation films beyond the musical score. Unexpectedly the most fascinating scenes are between Grier and Forster: glowing in the limelight of their first major Hollywood film after decades of work. --Doug Thomas
