The older brother convinces his sibling to agree to commit suicide. This sets in motion a chain of events which finds Natha in the eye of a storm. The local bigwigs the state government high-ranking bureaucrats federal ministers and the national media all become stakeholders in the mad circus that errupts.

The closer she gets to the truth, the more danger she faces--not to mention the likelihood that the men in town intend to replace her as well. Screenwriter William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) and director Bryan Forbes (King Rat) made this a taut, tense semi-classic with a healthy dose of satiric wit.   Producer-turned-director Irwin Winkler crafted this 1992 remake of Jules Dassin's 1950 film noir Night and the City, the tale of a small-time hustler in London who gets in over his head. Winkler's version is set in New York and stars Robert De Niro as a shyster lawyer who decides to get even with a boxing promoter (Alan King) who bests him in court. A couple of innocents are talked into helping the cause, notably the brother (Jack Warden) of De Niro's enemy and a barmaid (Jessica Lange) who agrees to finance the operation. Everything goes south, plunging the hero into prospects of real disaster. The film is far from an exemplary, contemporary noir, but its outstanding cast, with no shortage of charisma and dynamics, keeps things terribly interesting. So does the funny but terse script by Richard Price (Clockers), who also has a cameo as a doctor. Winkler's sensibilities as a tasteful and intelligent producer still get in the way of his daring as a director, but he does leave us with much to be satisfied about.--Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

From the novel 'Seven And A Half Cents' by Richard Bissell and adapted into a successful musical which the french director Jean Luc Goddard called the first left wing operetta! The Inspector General (Dir. Henry Koster 1949): In this delightful period farce set in Russia in the 1800's Danny Kaye plays an illiterate buffoon who is mistaken by the villagers for their feared Inspector General.Hilarious situations ensue as Danny is caught up in court intrigue without having a clue of what is going on. Made For Each Other (Dir. John Cromwell 1939): This highly appealing comedy drama stars James Stewart and Carole Lombard as a young couple battling illness lack of money inept servants and interfering in-laws... The Little Shop Of Horrors (Dir. Roger Corman 1960): The original movie of this classic black comedy/horror about a rather dim-witted young man Seymour (Jonathan Haze) working for a week in Mushnick's flower shop on skid row who develops an intelligent bloodthirsty plant. He names the plant Audrey Jr and as it grows it demands human meat for sustenance and Seymour is forced to kill in order to feed it. Jack Nicholson has a notable cameo part as an undertaker Wilbur Force who is a masochistic dental patient and the film also features the writer Charles Griffith as the hold-up man and the voice of Audrey Jr. Sources differ but it was reputed that the film was shot in just two or three days and in 1961 it was billed as The Funniest Picture This Year. The film inspired the well-known off-Broadway hit musical and musical/comedy movie remake starring Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene was made in 1986.

  The complicated life of J. Edgar Hoover is thoughtfully and quietly distilled into a feature film by director Clint Eastwood. J. Edgar is a movie, therefore, that’s free of fuss. Told mainly through an older Hoover reciting back his life story, it’s a conventional structure that allows Eastwood to cherry-pick some of the most interesting moments from the contrversial life of the man who was the first director of the modern day FBI. J. Edgar, as a movie, is sometimes a little too cautious for its own good, sidestepping one or two areas of its subject’s life. But in the title role, Leonardo DiCaprio is in excellent form. Sometimes weighed down by ageing make-up, but always able to hold the screen, it’s his central performance that’s the compelling reason to watch the movie. Judi Dench has less to work with as his mother, although Armie Hammer fares better as Clyde Tolson, the man who may or may not have been Hoover’s lover. The disc release does dig into Hoover a little bit more, with a feature exploring the complexity of the man. At the very least, it serves as a starting point to find out more about one of the most fascinating people in modern American history. The film and disc certainly scratch the surface on him, and there’s plenty here to like and admire. They do leave you with a lot more to discover, though… --Jon Foster
