Twilight of a Woman's Soul (1913) his first surviving film already shows his masterful use of deep-focus photography. After Death (1915) is adapted from a story by Turgenev and is imbued with one of Bauer's favourite themes: the psychological hold of the dead over the living. The Dying Swan (1916) takes a sardonic view of the popular obsession with morb

Grease was a phenomenal hit with its target teenage audience when it was released in 1977. The songs dominated the pop charts and brought heady success for its lead actors, John Travolta (Danny) and Olivia Newton-John (Sandy) despite the fact that--as with their energetic co-stars--their own teenage years were some way behind them. As they seize the chance to relive their schooldays, their verve and enthusiasm explodes from the screen. The real class, though, comes from Stockard Channing as feisty Rizzo and, in a couple of cameos, wisecracking silver screen actresses from yesteryear Eve Arden and Joan Blondel. Based on the 1972 stage show and adding several new numbers, Grease is at heart a rites-of-passage movie with plenty of feel-good moments and a euphoric buzz. "You're the One That I Want", "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and "Summer Nights" became the soundtrack for a generation of high-school students on the cusp of adulthood. Today, it looks like a pastiche of those 1950s Connie Francis rock & roll beach films. But the steady stream of double entendres and knowing body language render it more accessible to the less innocent late 1970s. It's overwhelming nostalgia for anyone in the vicinity of 40. On the DVD: The 25th anniversary special edition of Grease rolls back the years: the 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen presentation transports you instantly back to fifth-form heaven in the local fleapit. The Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound ensures that the songs--ever the staple of MOR radio--complete the nostalgia trip with real zip. The main extra is a short series of fond reminiscences from the actors and director Randal Kleiser, actually filmed for the 20th anniversary. --Piers Ford

THE YOUNG VICTORIA is a lavish costume drama that focuses on the early life of Queen Victoria (Emily Blunt, MY SUMMER OF LOVE, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA), one of the most venerated monarchs in British history. Born into nobility, her ascent to the throne was assured. Politically however, Victoria's inexperience meant that she relied heavily upon advisers to guide her. None more so than her cousin Prince Albert (Rupert Friend, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE), who, at the tender age of 21 she married and went on to have nine children with.Produced by Sarah Ferguson--herself no stranger to the trials and tribulations that befall young royalty--and directed by Jean-Marc Vallee (C.R.A.Z.Y), THE YOUNG VICTORIA is a visually-stunning film that gives candid insight into the challenges faced by those growing up in the public eye.
One of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s as well as a box-office hit, Jerry Maguire cemented writer-director Cameron Crowe's reputation as "the voice of a generation". Crowe could probably do without that label, but he's definitely in sync with the times with this savvy story about a sports agent (Tom Cruise) whose fall from grace motivates his quest for professional recovery, and the slow-dawning realisation that he needs the love and respect of the single mom (Renée Zellweger in her breakthrough role) who has supported him through the worst of times. This is one of Cruise's best, most underrated performances, and in an Oscar-winning role, Cuba Gooding Jr. plays the football star who remains Jerry Maguire's only loyal client on a hard road to redemption and personal growth. If that sounds touchy-feely, it is only because Crowe has combined sharp entertainment with a depth of character that is rarely found in mainstream comedy. --Jeff Shannon
