  Rain is the second film version of Somerset Maugham's oft-filmed story Miss Thompson a shocking tale by period standards and a melodrama well-served by director Lewis Milestone's expressionistic style. The film stars the young Joan Crawford as Sadie Thompson a San Francisco prostitute hoping to start a new life in the South Seas. While on the island of Pago Pago she becomes involved with a group of soldiers and falls in love with one of them Sgt. Tim O'Hara (William Gargan). This puts her at odds with Rev. Alfred Davidson (Walter Huston) a hellfire and brimstone religious reformer who has already converted the native people to Christianity and who intends to protect the purity of the soldiers. The minister has O'Hara confined to quarters and threatens Sadie with deportation having learned that she was indicted for a crime although unaware she was framed. Davidson becomes strangely obssessed with reforming the prostitute and harangues her relentlessly about renouncing her evil ways until Sadie gradually is filled with the spirit of repentance. But for the minister the power of beauty trumps the power of the Lord with surprising consequences. Beautiful yet unusual camera work by Oliver Marsh adds to the film's unique character.

At the heart of the movie lies a desolate character, guilty of a crime shrouded in taboo, but hoping against all reason that society will accord him a modicum of absolution. A fascinating portrait of a life caught in a state of perpetual turmoil, this is an audacious second feature from Kassell.

This may appear to be Paris in the 1890s with can-can dancers, bohemian denizens like Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo) and ribaldry at every turn, but it's really Luhrmann's pop-cultural wonderland, where everyone and everything is encouraged (in the third of Luhrmann's "red-curtain" extravaganzas, following Strictly Ballroom and Romeo & Juliet) to shatter boundaries of time and texture, colliding and careening in a fast-cutting frenzy that thinks nothing of casting Elton John's "Your Song" 80 years before its time. Still, there's something genuine brewing between costars Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman (as, respectively, a poor writer and his unobtainable object of desire), and their vocal talents are impressive enough to match Luhrmann's orgy of extraordinary sets, costumes and digital wizardry---Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com Baz Luhrmann takes a shot at reinventing Shakespeare's story of star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet as a visual pastiche inspired by MTV imagery, Hong Kong action-picture clichés, and Luhrmann's own taste for deliberate, gaudy excess. The result is explosive chaos, both in terms of bullets and visual sensibility, which some may find impossible to stick with for more than a few minutes. Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes play the leads, though not with much distinction, while Pete Postlethwaite makes a huge impression as this movie's version of Friar Laurence.
