Eureka Entertainment to release THE DON IS DEAD, an explosively violent 70s gangster flick starring Anthony Quinn, Frederic Forrest and Robert Forster, on Blu-ray as a part of the Eureka Classics range from 18 January 2021. A criminally underrated and explosively violent gangster saga from director Richard Fleischer, The Don Is Dead features one of the all-time great casts of tough guy actors: legendary multiple Oscar®-winner Anthony Quinn, Robert Forster (Jackie Brown), and Frederic Forrest (Apocalypse Now) are joined by Al Lettieri (The Getaway), Joe Santos (The Friends of Eddie Coyle), Abe Vigoda (The Godfather), Vic Tayback (Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore), Victor Argo (Taxi Driver), and Sid Haig (House of 1000 Corpses). Riddled with as many double crosses as bullet hits, The Don Is Dead is like a gritty 70s pulp paperback come to bloody life. After his Vegas crime family don father dies, Frank Regalbuto (Forster) now places his loyalties with Don Angelo DiMorra (Quinn), but a rival family wants to trigger a gang war and destroy the DiMorra clan. They make Frank think that his girlfriend Ruby (Prime Cut's Angel Tomkins) is locked in an affair with Don Angelo, hoping Frank will take revenge. Enlisting the Fargo brothers hit men, Tony (Forrest) and Vince (Lettieri) -- who have some nasty sibling rivalry issues of their own -- Frank is determined to rise to the top and wreak vengeance, no matter the body count that results. Fleischer directed The Don Is Dead just after his science fiction classic from the same year, Soylent Green, and this just demonstrates the eclectic filmmaker's versatility. Also responsible for everything from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) and Fantastic Voyage (1966) to Doctor Dolittle (1967) and Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970), Fleischer could clearly do it all, but he was at his best with riveting thrillers like The Boston Strangler (1968), Compulsion (1959), and the noir classic The Narrow Margin (1952). The Don Is Dead fits in with those suspenseful shockers, and is ripe for rediscovery. Features: 1080p presentation on Blu-ray Uncompressed LPCM audio (original mono presentation) Optional English SDH subtitles Brand new feature length audio commentary by author Scott Harrison Theatrical trailer PLUS: A collector's booklet featuring an extensive essay on the crime films of director Richard Fleischer by film writer and journalist Barry Forshaw

Widely recognised as Bergman's most extraordinary and influential film Persona is a rich and poetic study of womanhood and identity featuring two of the Swedish master's greatest leading ladies Liv Ullmann and Bibi Andersson. Elizabeth (Liv Ullmann) is a famous actress who is suddenly taken ill and left without speech. While convalescing on the coast she is cared for by Nurse Alma (Bibi Andersson) and silenced by the effect of her possibly psychosomatic illness finds that her nurse does the talking for both of them. Gradually the two women's identities begin to merge and their personalities become one. Almost impossible to describe in words this landmark film is a visual tour-de-force which remains as innovative and startling today as it was in 1966. This version is fully uncut and features newly created uncensored subtitles.

If you read the label on a box of chocolates you'll know exactly what you're gonna get. Life isn't like that in Forrest Gump, however, which is one of the reasons why this movie divided appreciative audiences from hard-hearted critics like few others before it. Audiences responded to the Frank Capra-style sentimentality of this warm-hearted tale of a good ol' American boy making his way in the world without ever losing his pure and simple innocence. Critics, however, were made uneasy by the apparently reactionary subtext to the parallel lives of Forrest and his girlfriend Jenny. Her fate, contrasted with his, suggests a triumph for plain ol' American values over dangerous freethinking hippies and liberals. Whether the movie is just unadulterated sentiment or right-wing propaganda, one thing at least was acknowledged by all: that Forrest Gump displays all the craftsmanship of one of Hollywood's most inventive directors and features a central performance from an actor renowned for his total commitment to every role. Thanks to Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks, even the most cynical critic will find it hard not to shed at least one tear by the end of this undeniably engrossing movie. The soundtrack is great, too. On the DVD: another good two-disc set gives fans of Gump and budding filmmakers alike plenty to enjoy. The anamorphic picture and Dolby Surround on Disc 1 do full justice to Zemeckis' vision, which is accompanied by two commentaries: one from the director, producer Steve Starkey and production designer Rick Carter, and another one from producer Wendy Finerman. Disc 2 has the usual making of documentary (30 mins), plus some neat featurettes on the production and sound design and the many special effects shots (including how they made Gary Sinise lose his legs). In addition there are some screen tests of Robin Wright and a very young Haley Joel (The Sixth Sense) Osment, plus trailers and a photo gallery. All in all this is a worthwhile package. --Mark Walker

This adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's Ripley's Game is dominated by the electric interplay of Bruno Ganz and Dennis Hopper. Ganz plays Jonathan Zimmermann, a picture framer with a terminal medical condition. Through a series of encounters and machinations, he accepts money to kill a criminal in order to support his family after his death. He is aided by Tom Ripley (Hopper), an art forger. Unbeknown to Jonathan, Ripley is behind all the plans. However, the criminal and borderline sociopath's feelings towards Jonathan eventually change and he feels a responsibility to take care of his new friend. Wenders' neo-noir is a far cry from the previous adaptation of a novel featuring Highsmith's most famous character. René Clément's Plein Soleil, a 1960 adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley was all sun and glamour. (As was Anthony Minghella's 1999 version.) Wenders' take on the third novel in the Ripley series which also used an element of the plot from the second, Ripley Under Ground is grittier. And in Dennis Hopper, Ripley is a far more unsettling figure. The actor allegedly arrived on set high as a kite and was not the easiest person to work with. But his performance exudes a menace that Hopper would later develop into the terrifying presence that is Frank, the psychopath who dominates David Lynch's Blue Velvet. Ganz, by contrast, plays Jonathan with a subtlety that makes his transformation as the story progresses all the more unsettling. Their odd-couple relationship is the lynchpin of the film, one of the few adaptations of her work that Highsmith admired.

If you're looking for the definitive example of dry wit, look no further than this 1952 version of The Importance of Being Earnest. Of course, it helps to have Oscar Wilde's beloved play as source material, but this exquisite adaptation has a charmed life of its own, with a perfectly matched director and a once-in-a-lifetime cast. Mix these ingredients with Wilde's inimitable repartee, and you've got a comedic soufflé that's cooked to perfection. Opening with a proscenium nod to its theatrical origins, the film turns Wilde's comedy of clever deception and mixed identities into a cinematic treat, and while the 10-member cast is uniformly superb, special credit must be given to Dame Edith Evans, reprising her stage role as the imperiously stuffy Lady Bracknell. To hear her Wilde-ly hilarious inflections and elongated syllables is to witness British comedy in its purest form. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
