Faouzi Bensaïdi directs this tender family drama with veins of both comedy and tragedy running through it, set in a remote Moroccan town in the early 1980s. Amina (Nezha Rahile) takes her seven-year-old son Mehdi (Fouad Labied) to live with her father-in-law Ahmed (Mohamed Majd) after her husband is jailed for political activism. To avoid Mehdi knowing about his father's incarceration, Amina tells him that his father is away working in France. Mehdi finds it difficult to make friends, but becomes the teacher's pet - a role that leads to him being further ostracised by the local children. The family struggle to settle in their new life, all the while hoping that Mehdi's father will be released. The film won the Prix Le Premier Regard and the Prix de la Jeunesse at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.
