A weekend cruise on a luxurious party yacht goes horribly wrong for a group of old high-school friends.
"Nerve-shredding terror"? Hardly.
Firstly though, I'll dispose of any positivity right here so I can briefly concentrate on writing about why this film drowned in its own stupidity.
Adrift starts moderately well, it"s initially intriguing; the scene is set with a suitably dark air surrounding oblivious yet believable characters. The film is suitably shot, the pace is good and real promise develops; in fact the intro could easily have been the prologue to a good CSI episode.
By the time everyone started dying off in the most absurdly boring and unconvincing ways I really didn't care any more. Not only is the dialogue consistently dreadful but not one character is remotely interesting or likeable, which perhaps makes it less obvious who's next to accidentally murder their 'friend' or sever their own head with a seahorse (not part of the film), but surely it"s better to have people that at least feel "real" so there can be some genuine shock in the audience when someone winds up dead. I mean this isn"t Final Destination, where the ingenious routes to death are exactly why you"re watching it. Everyone"s bopping around in the sea in this picture, there"s little scope for visual domino effects or unexpected surprises, so strong character development, inventive relationships, genuinely impressive even though futile teamwork and believable deaths are essential - of course, sadly, none of these elements materialise.
Speaking of team work, their attempts at re-boarding the yacht are almost as pathetic as their perseverance. Not only are there obvious hand-holds on the stern which they should have gripped onto much earlier in the film to avoid hours of treading water, but, most annoyingly, I can think of an incredibly simple way for several clearly athletic people to boost one small woman several feet in the air whilst all treading water, perfectly high enough to climb back on board to rectify the idiocy that got them stuck in the water in the first place. Perhaps I"ve been watching too much synchronised swimming, but these death-awaiting young people emanate exceptional stupidity; I have no sympathy for them and no reason to recommend this film.
