Asif Kapadia directs this romantic drama based on the novel by Kurban Said. The film follows Ali Khan Shirvanshir (Adam Bakri), an Azerbaijani Muslim who falls in love with Georgian Christian Nino Kipiani (María Valverde). Deciding to elope to country, the pair's life becomes complicated with the outbreak of World War I and Ali's subsequent appointment as Deputy Foreign Minister in Baku. Meanwhile, with the Russians amassing troops on the border, Ali and Nino face some tough choices as violence breaks out in their homeland. The cast also includes Connie Nielsen and Homayoun Ershadi.
