Jodie Foster stars in this big screen adaptation of Anna Leonowens' autobiographical novels, which provided the inspiration for 'Anna and the King of Siam' (1946) and 'The King and I' (1956). Recently widowed, English schoolteacher Anna arrives in Bangkok in 1862 to act as tutor to the son of King Mongkut (Chow Yun Fat) of Siam. A culture clash is inevitable, but Anna impresses her new employer with her strength of character, and the two gradually develop a mutual respect. When Mongkut discovers a plot to overthrow him Anna lends her loyal support, but their relationship is threatened by the King's seemingly barbaric treatment of his concubine, Tuptim (Bai Ling).
