Ealing tragi-comedy set in post-war Dublin. Robert Beatty stars as Gulliver Sheils, an impoverished young daydreamer who harbours a fantasy of emigrating to Tahiti. To this end, he hatches the ingenious plan of loitering on a particularly dangerous street corner in the hope that he might be able to save a wealthy person from having a traffic accident, the idea being that said person might subsequently offer him a financial reward. However, just as it looks as though his dreams might come true, his feelings for local beauty Jennifer (Moira Lister) get the better of him, and his fantasies of a South Seas island are nipped in the bud.
