Divorced mother Adele August (Susan Sarandon) decides that the time has come for a change, and so moves from Wisconsin to Los Angeles with her 14-year-old daughter, Ann (Natalie Portman). The two women are chalk and cheese: Adele is loud and brash on the surface, but vulnerable inside, while Ann is capable and assured. However, they have more in common than either of them thought: Adele spirals into depression when she is dumped by Josh, a good-looking dentist, while Ann becomes distraught when favourite cousin Benny is killed in a car crash.
