  • Appleseed

I am not what you would class as a manga fan but I bought this DVD on recommendation from others.

Now I see that this medium can be awe inspiring and deep, full of action and emotion with a real plot and story behind it.

Graphically it is stunning, emotionally too.

The film tries to blur the distinction between human and machine, is a machine just a machine or can humans form relationships with machines?

Do we have more rights than a machine to live or equal rights or indeed less right because of our violent tendancies?

The character animation is so smooth and detailed and the backgrounds are also convincing, some of the slow motion animations are incredibly detailed.

I give this film 10 out of 10 and urge you to see it even if this format isn't usually your thing, you won't be disappointed.

Feature version of the Japanese anime series. In the year 2131, the Third World War has devastated mankind, and has led to the creation of a utopian society in the hi-tech city of Olympus. Deunen is a female warrior from the scorched wastlelands who meets her long lost boyfriend Briareos, who has been transformed into a half-machine cyborg. Travelling with him to Olympus, the pair meet Hitomi, a member of the genetically engineered race who have taken over the city and are trying to defend it from rebel attack. Deunen and Briareos stay to help Hitomi and his people defend the city, but the longer they stay there, the more Deunen begins to suspect that her real allegiance should lie with the rebels trying to take it over.

Please note this is a region 2 DVD and will require a region 2 (Europe) or region Free DVD Player in order to play. The 2004 Appleseed feature is a reworking of the earlier video based on the manga by Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell). In 2131, most of humanity has withdrawn to the glittering city of Olympus after a devastating war. When the curvaceous Deunan Knute comes to Olympus, she encounters her former comrade Briareos, now a cyborg, and the lovely android Hitomi. The fate of Hitomi, Olympus, and humanity rest on the lost "Appleseed" technology that Deunan's mother helped to develop. A standard series of chases, mecha battles, and confrontations leads to a predictable ending. When the original Appleseed appeared in 1988, it felt like a summary of anime's past, while Akira pointed the way to the future. This new version feels like a mishmash of Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Jin-Roh, Evangelion, and other, more exciting works. The motion-capture CG is typically weightless, and the mecha look oddly squat.
